Hurricane Ida recovery: Louisiana local leaders say FEMA ‘missing in action’ as parish pleads for help
What are the limits that harms their earnings? just curious. Do they have physicals twice a year?Get rid of the idiotic hours of service rules and medical standards for CDL drivers. The standards for a CDL physical are more stringent than that of an airline pilot and the hours of service rules severely limit the drivers ability to earn. I've said it a thousand times that if safety was truly the goal the DOT would outlaw paying by the mile and remove the overtime exemption.

Thanks. It will take me awhile to digest that and compare it to our rules. Our most recent rules came about as a result of a crash where fatigue was a significant contributor. The funny thing is that they are more onerous rather than restrictive. We can do a 2 man 9 hour block day (but can be on duty for 13 or more under certain circumstances) I am actually a little rusty on domestic rules, but suffice it to say that after the change, more pilots are more tired than before. As a long haul international guy the flights I do are mostly over 12 hours so we require 4 pilots. I guess that is a comparison to 'team driving', and it is the right requirement. I am flying back from Korea today, and my sleep cycle is completely messed up. It's coming up on 5am here and I am wide awake. I have been here since the 29th (I left on the 27th... figure that one out.)Some have physicals every 90 days, 6 months once per year or every other year but for every other year you pretty much have to be in olympic athlete shape now. Currently if you have a BMI of 35 or more (going to 30 next year) or your neck is 17" or more you have to have a sleep study, which means you have to have a C-pap.
As for HOS you have 14 hours to drive 11 once you come on duty and you have to take a minimum 30 minute break midway through your shift and take 10 consecutive hours off duty. Unless you are team driving you can't split off duty time like you used to. That sounds like a lot of available driving time but all too often shippers/receivers will take hours to load/unload a truck which the driver isn't getting paid for and cuts into the available money making time. If safety was the goal DOT would forbid paying by the mile.

Yeah... it's complicated, but simply put, since they are such long flights we get paid for that time and just perdiem for the down time I am sitting in the hotel. It works out pretty well in the end. A normal month is right around 78 hours of pay. A long trip like this can be worth half a month and it is only 6 days. But I am gone from home that whole time.Do you get paid on those long layovers?

Yeah. I am on call for October. I had to have off for a couple of weekends and I couldn't bid for trips and guarantee that I would have the time off I needed. So I am at the mercy of scheduling on the days I am available. Not bad. What do you do, a couple of those a month?

It is the advantage of being on a senior airplane. The junior domestic guys work their asses off.
I've been doing international since 2002. Not exclusively, but mostly. I have been blessed and I have been to a lot of places, but I usually only get to stay for 24 hours. I can show you around Paris in a day and see everything worth seeing. How long have you been piloting international flights? Have you been to like almost every country worth visiting?
