They offered a very public display of unity with broad smiles and a hug, despite claims that Harris felt isolated and that Biden was distancing himself from an unpopular vice president

No masks? I have always been pro mask for Kamala.

The GOP will screw up a golden opportunity by trotting out the old string of losers they have in the barn. The GOP needs to drop warmed over politicians and run people with some actual accomplishments - that means not politicians, academics, or half baked CEOs, and the GOP can't/won't make the plunge because all politicians know is politics.
So who would meet this criteria?

Americans like to be first—in Olympic gold medals, for example—but maybe not in this category: If the $4 trillion House spending bill passes, the U.S. will have the highest combined federal and state personal income tax rate in the developed world.

Yay Biden!

A better question is who worthy would volunteer for political office. In the end you can't possibly believe that the politicians on tap, the academics they pull as staff/advisors, and mercenaries filling in as CEOs are the best we have to offer.

definitely a vicious cycle - the system will destroy a Mr. Smith. Too much money is vested in the system to make it worth challenging if you aren't part of it.

The first part of the issue is that there are too few Mr. Smiths. It has always seemed that lacking that kind of desire to right what's wrong, that most people seeking political office are steeped in egotism - a lust to be above others and to have an official soapbox. The bought ambassador positions are just another example of a new title or position to flaunt.
