I guess I'll take the 4* with the 3.2 GPA. You never turn down the 5 star unless there are underlying circumstances not being told here.

Are you kidding me?

A team full of 3 stars can win you championships in the WAC, not the SEC. Sure a Reviez in a couple spots are good. But a team full of Reviezs?

He's not saying you won't have other 5 stars on the team. I think everyone would agree that it would be ideal to have a 5 star that also had good grades and was a leader, but that wasn't the question :good!:

Colt is a good example for the 3* point of view. But Tennessee has to go thru Florida and Alabama to get on top. They are NOT loading up with 3*'s.

The question then IMO has to be looked at on an individual basis. The ability to discern the intangibles, evaluate the potential, and make those calls are why the coaches get paid a lot of money.
True not loading up; however, Bama did sign nine 3-stars plus a 2-star yesterday. Some lower rated or even unrated players have a world of unnoticed talent and/or untapped potential. Some players fly under the radar for a variety of reasons, and some are just late bloomers. A fair amount of Bama's starters including All SEC and NFL bound players were ranked 3 stars or even lower. For example, all SEC safety, Rashad Johnson, who was drafted by AZ last year, was a walk on.

If you are a coach worth his salt, you don't even look at the * ratings and you take the player that you believe will help you win more games.

Isn't that kind of a redundant statement in a way?

Usually, the guys with the 4 and 5 stars are the guys that help you win.

Depends on why they were a 5* and why the other was a 3*.

Some guys will be lower because they're short or not fully developed... or because they haven't played in the right conference. Some haven't had exposure through camps et al.

If a guy is a 3* for the same reason Hughes was a 2* then you take that guy all day long.

If the 5* got his ratings off measureables like O'Neal or even a kid like Chris Donald... then you take a pass.

Assuming everything else is equal other than the GPA, you take the 5* everytime. I would rather coach a 5* (who has better physical abilities) up on his class work, than to coach a 3* (who has better grades but less physical abilities) up on the field. There are always exceptions, but generally physical strength, size, speed, quickness, etc. are things that can't be "coached up" and often it is these skills that make the player a 5*.

No but I would wager there is a similar number of 5*Flops as well.

Noooooooooooooo, there's not. It has been said many times on this board, and I did research personally. If you're a 5 star there's about a 20 percent chance of being drafted in the first round. Three stars at the most, is like 2 percent.
