Prop 8 Overturned

I just still find the idea of keeping the 'right to discriminate' fascinating. I totally understand the reasons behind it...it just comes across a little backwards imo. Take govt' out of the equation here and think about what it is that's important.

Backwards? In what way?

I have this thing and I think I am pretty consistent about it no matter what the issue or if it is something I approve of or not. My things is this: I believe that the individual has complete right to do, act, think, believe, say, etc in any way he chooses as long as he doesn't try to harm another, steal, cheat, destroy someone else's property or root for Alabama.

The problem with freedom is that sometimes people will use it to do things that I disapprove of, or do things that are harmful to themselves, or refuse to go out with me to homecoming in '93 (but I digress). Where was I? Oh, yeah. Anyway, the good part of freedom is that people can do what they want without being told how to live. I am all for that and I am willing to accept the consequences. Even if that includes the hottest chick in school refusing to go to homecoming with me.

We have a right to be free. We have a right to be treated equally under the law. We do not have the right to be treated equally by our fellow citizens. It is not possible to simultaneously be free and be required to behave in a certain way.

Right, so when citizens who think gays should be treated equally under the law start discriminating against citizens who disagree - should I start playing a tiny violin?

Nope. It is entirely their right to do so.

As long as discrimination is government sanctioned, then I think it is allowable. Even if I think it is wrong.
