Push to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October...

If your church is doing it on a day other than Halloween, I have absolutely no problem with that. It's the ones that do it ON Halloween that bug me because it's not JUST those in unfavorable circumstances that take advantage. I'm absolutely all for community outreach and I know the intentions with this are sincere. However what it's doing is diluting the time-honored tradition of door to door trick or treating, a tradition that still works just fine and never needed to be messed with in the first place. The neighborhood we live in is a prime example. We have very little traffic on Halloween anymore because everyone goes to the church near our neighborhood entrance for trunk or treat. Does it keep me up at night? No but I do find it a little sad that such a great tradition is being altered by this movement when I don't think it was necessary to begin with.

Fair reasoning.

Just for contrast I will say may neighborhood borders a main road with retail businesses and that road has a big truck or treat all down the street. It only goes from 4pm-6pm then everyone files into the residential part. We give out 1500 pieces of candy easily. My mom and mom in law come over to hand out candy while we take the kids through the neighborhood. It wears them out LOL.

Our town sent out a news release Monday evening moving halloween to last night because it is supposed to rain all day today. To me this is just stupid. We took the kids, but it was a scramble to get everyone ready on short notice.

That is stupid. You don’t just move activities and holidays like that.

Must be a really small town to get the word out that fast.

Weather was great here tonight. Nice fall evening but not too cold.

In this age of social media people don't get out and really get to know their neighbors anymore. When I was growing up we knew just about everyone on our street and the next street over on either side. When I went door to door, pretty much everyone who answered was someone who knew my parents, and they felt safe letting me do it. These days many people don't even know their neighbor's name, let alone anything about them. People are leery about letting their kids knock on a complete stranger's door, and rightly so. Trunk or Treat offers parents a safer alternative.

The problem is when it falls during the week, kids have school. It's to create more time for kids to actually do it.

Just have kids off the next day. One extra day of being off isn’t going to ruin their educations

Our neighbors did that, just kept their kids out of school the next day. Seems like an issue with priorities to me, but each to their own.

how late are kids staying out? 8 is when most are gone from the streets, 9 at the VERY latest. shouldn't be any issue with them having enough time to sleep afterwards.

Just curious, but why do you hate it?

I explained it in a post above...

I can respect that sentiment. I thought you were going to come from a religious angle about Halloween being a pagan holiday.

But is it really? I mean, come on. In 2018 can we really still call Halloween an evil pagan holiday? We've mainstreamed it into a harmless modern day celebration. No one is going around saying "Happy Samhain" and looking to sacrifice humans. The ancient Celtic ritual has absolutely nothing in common with what we celebrate as Halloween today. I just laugh anytime I hear someone try to use that as justification for having "Trunk or Treat." As if that's somehow more justifiable in the eyes of God than kids simply trick or treating door to door.

If we're going to shame Halloween, we might as well shame Christmas while we're at it. Most people do not know that it's origins come from the ancient pagan holiday called "Mas" and the Church, looking to absorb and asimilate as many of the pagan worshipers of that time as possible, decided to adopt the celebration and put their own spin on it by adding "Christ" in front of the name and declaring it a celebration of Jesus' birthday (a birthday that's never once commanded in the scriptures for us to observe by the way). That is where the term "Christ-Mas" comes from (most Churches leave that little detail out). So when I hear someone "tsk tsk" about the gross commercialization of Christmas and how evil society is for trying to take "Christ" out of it and instead use the all-inclusive "Happy Holidays" I just laugh because chances are, Christmas is a holiday that God never intended for us to observe in the first place.

Kids are tricky. Some kids can miss a hour or two of sleep and be perfectly normal the next day. Others can't miss any and still function. It is up to the parents to know the limits their kids though and to do the hard parenting of making sure their kids can function the next day even if it means they only trick or treat for an hour instead of 2 or 3 like everyone else.

I dislike it for that reason. Same reason I dislike churches strongly suggesting I attend on other holidays that have nothing to do with faith (Thanksgiving and New Years come to mind).

I've always viewed Trunk or Treat as a recruiting tool by churches to hopefully try and gain membership, of course in the interest of community outreach and helping those in need. I know that sounds a bit cynical but it's not unfounded. I've had my share of bad experiences with organized faith.

Wait... Thanksgiving?

Let's think about that word... "thanks" and "giving"... who are we giving thanks too?
