Mine's right in between those two pics right now and I would cry if i took off three inches. i still feel like it's too short right now. I am probably a little irrational about it though.

I'll be 40 in Sept and probably should have shorter hair, these days older women can get by with longer hair. It's tough to let go of your hair, the funny part is it's always up for work, and I seldom wear it down. If you wanna grow it out, go for it.
I seriously would get frustrated everytime I had to straighten long hair, especially at your lenghth. I grew my hair out to wear it curly, I think curly hair only looks nice that way, but its now shorter than what I've had in a long time and its so easy to straighten. Although having thick hair will always make it longer to straighten regardless.
And its so true, you want what you don't have. My sister has the perfect curly hair, the moment she steps out of the shower its curly where as mine dries curly, I wish mine was like hers, but I still like that I can go curly or straight.
i don't think there are restrictions anymore. tons of women in their 40's wear their hair long and make it look good! look at demi moore - she looks amazing with long hair. i would argue even better than with short! i say go for it! if you like it, wear it!
