Let's say Worley comes out this year and throws for 25 TD's and 9 INT's. Running game is productive. And this leads to an 8-4 season. Forget who we beat. Its only speculation. QB play has been a major problem recently. No one has really had any confidence in this position for a while. So long story short. If Worley has this kind of season and better recruits start taking notice of Butch Jones and this coaching staffs success. Does this qualify as one of the biggest turn arounds in football? This program has a proud tradition. But recent losing streaks and poor coaching hires. It appeared for the most part dead in its tracks. So is this one of the big turn arounds or just nutrition coming back around?

9 ints? Unacceptable. 😉

It really depends on who we beat to consider the answer... If we beat the likes of UGA, Fla.. Then I can see it as being nutrition... If we upset OU or Bama and one of the above mention then call it a turn around... My reasoning for this is that we had UGA beat last yr and could have beat Fl with Worley at QB.. We were blown out by the uppers of college football last yr... So if we can compete against those teams and beat the ones that we've been giving away then I'll call it a turn around...

Pretty big turnaround, IMO, considering our overall history and winning record before it all went FUBAR over the last decade.

It would be a great turnaround! We would definitely have a lot more interest in the program. With the way the coaching staff has been recruiting we would be loaded with "talent"! Hopefully coachable talent!

Frankly if we post 8-4 with this year's schedule, it would have to be considered the greatest turn around in the country this year. Maybe not quite at the level Auburn did last year but pretty close.

Quite honestly, unless we play for a national championship/make it to the 4 team playoff like Auburn did last year, no one outside of the southeast will even notice Tennessee. 8-4 would be great for the program but no one nationally would care.

Great responses. I tend to agree about who we beat or how we compete against the powers plays a part in the over all perspective outlook. I think were all hungry to be relivent again.

I disagree with this.

Your question is like...

Butch is the salesmen... He is going to win here. Maybe not this year but I guarantee it will be better than than watching Dool's try for that win one more time.

8-4 would most likely bring a top 25 finish. Nationally the recruits would stand up and take notice with eyes opened a little bit wider.

to get 8-4 will require beating 3 of these teams:

Alabama
Oklahoma
S. Carolina
Georgia
Florida
Missouri
Ol Miss

All of which will be ranked at the time and some will certainly be top 10 at that time. So yeah - someone is going to notice THAT you can darn well believe.

That is life in the SEC. I think a win against any of the first four would make a splash nationally. Ole Miss, Florida and Missouri are the best chances in my opinion. Ole Miss is not the most intimidating venue and Mizzoo and UF will be home games.

Wasn't talking about recruits. Was talking about national media, fans of other conferences, etc. If we go 8-4 it'll be HUGE for our recruiting, huge for our program and those in the SEC will take serious notice.... but no one else will give a rat's nationally until we're on a national stage....8-4, finishing 3rd in the SEC East won't get anybody's attention outside of our conference.

Yes, someone from the southeastern part of the country. No one from the Midwest, southwest, northeast or west. No one from the Big 10, PAC12 ......

To say no one is a little much. There are fans and media all over the country. Be it tv or radio. Or just out to dinner with friends who talk football 24/7 365 days a year. I'm sure someone outside of the south would take notice. Hell Dooley and Kiffin are gone and the fans around here can't get them out of their crawl. So to say no ONE will take notice is absurd.

Come on cwby, you know what I'm saying. I'm talking about on any appreciable scale. I'm sure there are UT fans in California who would be excited, but the Sacramento Bee or LA Times wouldn't have a story about the 3rd or 4th place team in the SEC East on the cover of their sports page taking a big leap forward and returning to national prominence. However, if Tennessee miraculously finishes 11-2 and is talked about or actually gets into the final 4 then we're getting national pub. That's the distinction I'm making.

Put it another way. Iowa is a nationally known program in the Big 10. Last year they improved from 4-8 in 2012 to 8-5, from 5th in their division in 2012 to 2nd in their division. Was there some national groundswell for Iowa last year? Did you know, as a Tennessee fan, that Iowa had a big turnaround similar to the scope that's being discussed/theorized here about Tennessee? Of course not.

I'd call it a solid turnaround. The right man is at the helm... and the Vols are due some breaks. (Breaks are where opportunity and team speed intersect... example = someone just a hair faster than Pig Howard on a fly-sweep might go into the end zone standing up, as opposed to a one handed dive for the pylon...)
