QB Rant (aka "If Scroggins Doesn't Come, Don't Kill Yourself")

Not one of your finest efforts...no offense.

So we've basically gained that Matt Flynn and Matt Mauck were good game managers and Krenzel played for Ohio State, thus diminishing anything he's ever done, for obvious reasons. All of the others were great college QB's.
What was remotely great about Chris Leak or Tee Martin?

Chris Leak was one of the most hyped qb's out of highschool in recent times. He didn't set the world on fire with his performance in college, but he was one of the big boys from a recruiting perspective. Maybe Tee Martin was the most underrated player in some time, but none of the people on that list were average joes. And if you think Chris Weinke wasn't up there you must have not seen FSU tearing people gaping corn holes while he was there.

As far as most games won, it's David Greene and Peyton Manning. And Matt Flynn wasn't that bad.

You are correct. Maybe I was thinking winning percentage, I dunno. One interesting fact on Dorsey I stumbled on was that he only threw 1 INT in his career in the 4th quarter. I thought that was nuts. Here's the top 5...

42 David Greene (42-10, 80.7)
39 Peyton Manning (39-6, 86.6)
38 Ken Dorsey (38-2 95%)
37 Matt Leinart (37-2, 94.8%)
37 Dan Marino (37-6, 86%)

I just always thought Flynn was terrible. With Bowe, Deucet, and Byrd at WR, he only managed 21 TDs and 11 INTs and completed 56% of his passes. He is the best example that you don't have to have a great QB to win a national title...

I actually think Chris Leak was very underrated considering he played under Zook and then had to switch to an offensive system he was not even meant for when Meyer came in. Yet he still posted monster passing stats over his career and came away with a NC. Switch him and Matt Leinhart and Leak would go down as the one of greatest college QBs easily IMO. The hype was warranted IMO. He handled his situation at UF very well, especially when Tebow came in.

Tebow, Leinart, and Weinke won the Heisman.
VY was one of the most dominating college players.
Krenzel was 3 time all conference.
Dorsey was a 2 time Heisman finalist
Heupal was AP Player of the Year

I'd say they are all pretty great.
Krenzel was never close to great. Ever.

Yeah, I realized that about Krenzel about ten minutes after I posted that. Either way, still over half the list you could consider great players.

Krenzel was pretty much a genius though IIRC. Didn't he end up getting a degree in microbiology and end up being a scientist or something?

The QB before him was the #1 overall pick and didn't manage nearly as much success. Plus, Flynn was in his first year with a new offensive system.

I will take Russell's 2006 team over Flynn's 2007 national championship team any day. Compare the 2 teams:

2006
lost AT #8 (11-2) Auburn (LSU may have gotten screwed in the loss)
lost AT #1 (12-1) Florida

2007
lost AT UNRANKED (8-5) Kentucky
lost AT HOME to UNRANKED (8-5) Arkansas

The 2006 team put Bowe (I was wrong, he didn't play with Flynn), Russell, Laron Landry, and Craig Davis all in the 1st round of the '06 draft...

In the last week of the 2007 regular season, EVERYBODY in college football (who mattered) lost which bumped the 2-loss Tigers from #7 to #2 in the BCS rankings. They are the ONLY 2-loss team to ever make it to the title game...

Flynn had 2 losses in '07. Russell had 2 losses in both '05 and '06. The '06 team had to go through a stacked Florida team while the '07 team did not. As far as Flynn winning the title, I think we can conclude that luck played a much bigger role than Flynn actually being worth a crap...

I'm not arguing that 07 LSU was any good. They were easily the worst champion the BCS has ever seen. However, they won the SEC and the whole kit and caboodle. Russell's greatest accomplishment was defeating an absurdly overrated Notre Dame team. Also, Russell spent his entire career with Jimbo Fisher. Flynn had to transition to Crowton's offense for his last season.

I would probably have to rate Flynn as average, but definitely not terrible. Crompton has been terrible, but Flynn is so far above him that if he dropped a penny it would slice Cromp in half.

I would murder many people to have Flynn as the QB of the 09-10 Vols...

Flynn did what he was supposed to do. He managed the game as a 5th year senior should. He was a big part of what they did that year in that sense.
