QB recruits - This Year

IMO

Blake Bell has the most upside of anyone in this class, but keep in mind he's only played qb for one year. Sims or Heaps would likely be able to contribute more as freshmen.

I'm hoping to sign Bell and another 4* guy in 10', but I think it's likely that one of the QB's we have in the stable now is our starter until the 11' season.

I was encouraged by Coleman's play in last Friday's scrimmage, and with a lot of help from the skill positions we should be able to plug a guy in and hope for few mistakes. I think our D will be good enough to win some ballgames without needing a superstar at QB.

Who cares how tall they are? As long as they get the job done, I don't care how tall they are. Tim Tebow is listed at 6'2 or 6'3 but standing next to Sam Bradford at the Heisman ceremony I'd say he's closer to 6'1.

I realize that not every QB must be of prototypical build. Sure, Tebow is about 6'2, but do you really think he's a drop back QB? No. Tebow is a spread QB (what we used to call a system QB) and RARELY takes a snap from under center. The kid we get will absolutely HAVE to be able to play under center. Normally, you'd think of a taller guy when naming pro-style qb's. Sims seems more like a chris leak style QB to me. Then again, Leak won a National Championship.

Most conventional drop back qb's measure out at 6'2 or taller. Thats not to say Sims won't be a good fit...just my perspective.

Heaps and Bell on my list as top candidates in that order and i also see Sims as a nice fit, but I'm more concerned with establishing a solid offensive line and a deep defensive line with several big nasty's in this class.

Ahhh yes....Drew Brees...The exception to the rule. I just said that Sims could very well be a good fit. He, like Drew Brees, would have to overcome his lack of height. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, I'd rather come in with a guy who doesn't have to worry about his mechanics and vision as it pertains to the O Line. Sure, you can point out a guy here and there who defy convention, but by in large, its hard to argue against the fact that pro-systems favor a larger QB.

I'm not hating on Sims, though...he could be a stud.

I am really intrigued by Bell's athleticism and size. He could really turn into something special. That said, I am extremely wary about turning over the keys to the program to someone as raw as Bell.

With this in mind, I still like Heaps as our top target of 2010. He might not have the physical gifts of Bell and Sims, but I like his accuracy and polish.

Doug Flutie was amazing. No doubt about it.

Still...best ever? Not in my book.

That was also 20-something years ago. Offenses have evolved leaps and bounds to scheme for the great athletes on defense. Its a completely different game than when when Flutie Flake was chucking around the pigskin.

Two words: Warren Moon.

I have really been on the Heaps bandwagon, but I have to admit that it is hard to ignore the size and athleticism that Bell could provide.

I think that who I would rather have, could very well depend on our situation. If Coleman could emerge as a viable option at QB, then it would allow Bell to possibly RS and get another year of polishing under his belt. (Note that I say Coleman bc Crompton will be gone this year). If the staff does not think that Coleman can get it done, then maybe I would lean towards a more polished QB like Heaps. Of course, Kiffin and Co may think that Bell is polished enough to strap it up as a freshman.

yes i agree. IMO Bell is who our top QB target should be.......he has everything kiffin wants and we have ties to him with Bryce

Blake Bell is a Dual Threat QB. Even though he has all the physical qualities of a pro-style QB, I am not convinced he will get an offer from UT. We had Tajh Boyd in the bag and we turned him away. Nick Montana is also listed as a DT-QB. I think we are working really hard to land Heaps and maybe Sims. There are a couple other pro style QB's rated pretty high, but we are not on to many of their list.

We're fooling ourselves if we think that CLK wouldn't target Blake Bell as his future QB. Now, I'm not sure who Kiff values more...Heaps or Bell. Heaps soes seem more polished and ready to step up as a true fresh if need be. Bell's size and athleticism is almost too much to pass up, though. If you've got a shot at this kid, you've got to go all out. Bell has more potential, in my opinion. I guess it just depends on what Kiff is looking to do in 2010-2011, and I guess that kind of depends on what the current stable of QB's do now.

Why does every single DT QB have to compare to Tajh Boyd? That is an awful comparison (TB and BB), physically, skill-wise, and not to mention BB doesn't have a very serious knee injury. Just because some recruiting expert labels a QB as DT does not mean they are all the same.

We can't forget that Heaps, being Mormon would possibly take a mission (Doesn't mean he has to, but it's probable). So Bell would at least be there for consecutive years progressing, with no risk of taking years off and having to get back into shape. Just a thought. I like Bell a lot. GREAT size.

I remember reading somewhere that Heaps has already come out proactively and said he wouldn't take a mission during college.

Bell has NEB #1 and also is interested in OU, ND, hopefully we can get into the mix after a visit

Uh, what makes you think Montana? He's really not a top tier QB..He's good, but a lot of it is name.

But who can argue with his pedigree? Look at the Mannings. Plus his name value would be huge for recruiting and UT publicity. I say we definitely go after Montana and two other high profile QBs like Heaps.

That is an awesome opinion

IMO, it's not. IMO, Montana isn't that great. Blake Bell, on the other hand, is a someone we should be going after hard IMO. Plus, having the tv crew cut to Dad Montana and mention him 20 times a game would get extremely old IMO.
