'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

No you discounting his elite numbers because he had talent around him...is dumb.

It’s called living in reality and using logic. Will Howard didn’t become 1,400 yards better as a QB by transferring.

Instead he had the best team in the country around him, which made him look far better.

You realize getting more clean pockets, more separation from your WRs, and more yards after the catch from your WRs are all things that make QBs look better, right?

I don’t even know how you can argue against that.

I think we just roll with Merk and Gmac at this point. If the short list is done, then we take the money and go for a WR and OL instead. This season is probably a wash.
I’m on board for this. Bring gas pipe back, get the young guys ready, and give Nico’s $2 mil to the best available in the portal.

CJH won 8+ games with average Milton and average Nico. This roster is as good those years. Should be able to manage at least another 8 wins.

I don’t know anything about anything, but I know some guys around Durham who are sending me messages saying “please tell me you guys aren’t going to go after Mensah.” I don’t think there’s anything there, but there are a few rumors going around . Is this pretty much just pie in the sky kind of stuff ?

Duke is paying him $4M/yr so no

I wonder if we might go after Byrum Brown from USF? Runs the same offense and wouldn't be as much of a learning curve playbook wise.

Obviously, Hype and Golesh are buddies, so it probably won't happen.

Ok My point is you still have to be a great QB to take advantage of it. They ran off Kyle McCord because he could not.

I find this thread incredibly ironic. Everyone hates Nico because he’s a mercenary POS that put money over team. Yet everyone here is going bonkers wanting us to go poach someone who has the exact same qualities. Make it make sense. It’s just utter nonsense. I personally don’t want another teams starter as it just feeds into the flawed system. I hope we just get a decent player to add some depth. Yes I am older and think integrity matters which is why I would be a horrible division one coach. I would love to see one of our two existing Quarterbacks take over.

I agree with you to a point. If a guys only motivation here is money, I’d prefer him to stay where he is at.

However, if his motivations are multi-faceted it could work really well: (a) wanting to play in the sec (b) sees benefit of playing for coach heup in a qb friendly offense, (c) bump in nil potential, (d) improve draft stock by exposure that comes along with playing for vols

Maybe Huep does him a solid later on.

Whoa, lets take this a step back: Everybody hates Nico's dad and agent because they tried to extort the school for more money. I have nothing personal against him because he just did what his family told him to do. His camp did have an argument for a pay raise because of the CFP bid, but realistically he was a mid tier QB looking for top tier money. Now, it looks like he is going to be playing at Tulane, which is a significant step down. They tried to play their cards for more money and it backfired.

You can be upset we are trying to poach another school's QB, but we are only in this position because Nico's camp put us here.

There are millions of dollars tied up in success. We have to focus on maximizing the rest of the team's potential. If that means getting a QB from somebody else, then so be it. There are millions of dollars wrapped up in this decision. Its not just about the QB, but also maintaining the rest of the roster. This helps fill seats, put UT on the TV, maximize ad opportunities for our advertising partners who pay to put their brand everywhere.

In short, we cannot just walk away from this empty handed without trying to poach. Too much money is wrapped up in our success or failure.

There is nothing wrong with gauging interest.

When we took UCF’s head coach after our idiot coach got caught doing stupid stuff; were we talking integrity then? This isn’t much different. I understand what you are saying but I believe if we want to continue to move up in the ranks of college football; we need to find a better option than what we currently have on the roster. It’s not wrong to play by the rules and find a better option. We at the minimum need to find another solid qb that deserves a scholarship, since we only have 2.

Well…let’s hope that comes to fruition.

Hoover would be my top choice. Kid is a monster
Another guy who can't run his way out of an oncoming train. He just isn't very mobile. This offense thrives on a guy who can operate outside of the pocket. Hoover has -14 career rushing yds. I'll agree, good passer, but he gives you nothing with his legs. Nico was a statue at times and he has 429 rushing yds in 18 games.

Maybe he should be even more of a statue. Trick em.

Chicken and egg: the offense can open up opportunities for QBs if the passing threat is there. Last year, and even the year before with Milton, defenses were able to pack the box knowing we were a run first team. Add a dynamic passing threat and all of a sudden we have light boxes, which is what Heupel really wants to face.

Not on a ledge of any sort. Rationalizing behavior because it helps us is all we are doing. I think it’s pretty unlikely that any true difference maker is isn’t under an agreement that he would have to break to play with us. It’s a dirty game and a double standard. I realize it’s naive on my part but I simply believe in a higher standard. The message to the players is absolutely how is this different than what Nico did. I will back away from this conversation now because it’s idealistic.

You're 100% right but everyone will explain it away as being okay because (insert name here) would be having a better opportunity here- which is an extremely arrogant way to justify it to yourself, but whatever.
