Question about agents and NIL

most of the time, the somebody in their ear has already been talking with someone about what they could get from school X. Long before portal even opens.

I get that but more than likely school X is considering multiple players in hopes of getting 1 or maybe school X is anticipating certain players on their team leaving for the draft or entering the portal. So it is a gamble that can leave a player who was sure they had a spot on the outside with no place to go or what they can get changes because school X got a player they wanted more.

Entering the portal is like quitting a job in anticipation of securing another job before you actually have secured that job. I've had some younger folks in my family actually get caught up in that. They learned the lesson quickly about making sure they had the other job first.

Probably a hard lesson learned for players who really think they are worth something only to find themselves left with nothing because school X gets a better offer.

If I were an agent all of my clients would hit the portal every year to see what they get offered from other schools. They can always go back. I would also tell them not to play with even a small injury as long as they get paid. It's also better to not make the playoffs. No need to be risking injury in 4 tough games at the end of the season, you get paid regardless. I would stop using the world playing time and convert to risking injury time. Getting paid without injury would be my main focus for myself and the player.

Spoken like true blood sucking agent.

Just saying you can try to negotiate up and end up negotiating down.
I left out the step of threatening your current team that you are unhappy and ask for NIL increase, then make the decision to jump. So you either get an increase or you take your chances. Yes, losing is a possibility but as an agent I would only be thinking of my commission.
