Question About this Offense

O line sucks. It was 5 on 3 this last drive and still couldn't hold. Long developing plays, Nico stays in pocket too long, wrs can't get open, runs only up middle, no quick passes. Offense sucks

I’m afraid the answer is we don’t run to the edges with this offense since the goal is to spread the defense out. So if we don’t get the mismatch downfield we’re screwed. QB has to take off I guess?

we spread the offense across the entire field.........to run the ball right up the middle

I don't understand why teams just don't get 5 WRs out, spread them out and push them to our run the DBs and get open that way. Just run straight and QB hits 1 of the 5. 20% chance someone gets open.

So, last year we believed that the offense was hamstrung by having Milton as QB. Are we saying the same this year because of Nico still coming into his own? Or is this more than that with the playcalling etc? People saying stuff about wanting Golesh back...I mean, this is and always has been Heupel's offense, right?

Tonight is incredibly disappointing. This is not a game we should have lost. I also agree we have a problem with WR’s inability to get open. That doesn’t help.

Horrible Conservative play calling. Coaches lost this game. Pitiful.
And I think that’s the key that we, as fans , do not want to hear. It’s not a coincidence that CJH has had two conservative offensive games in SEC play. He knows what we dont want to accept….. our offense is not that great. It has limits again.

Our Oline isn’t good and it all starts there but doesn’t end there. I’m sick of hearing how explosive this team is. Prove it. We can’t hang our hats on 2022 and playing teams like Kent State.

Watched a lot of what Patrino called tonight. I think he did it recognizing the TN D & DL were that good. Yet I have not seen ANY elements of that in what TN has called this year. Virtually none. Makes ZERO sense. To include understanding the limits of your QB (Arkansas').

Why spread everyone out to run laterally and toward more people?
It's a good question. Because, every time we do it we have gotten a significant gain this year. Today's play calls or utterly vanilla.

This is definitely not a game we should have lost. But we literally had our arse handed to us. Honestly, I feel lucky that Arkansas didn't hang points in the mid-thirties on us. Without any difficulty, they should have hung 21 in the first half alone. We were dominated on the stat sheet folks.

It’s a zone blocking scheme. Generally, it’s not usually designed to attack a specific hole. Running backs are taught to find the opening, cutback, or have the ability to bounce runs outside.

I can’t think of a single time this season that there’s been a run play outside the tackles with the exception of QB keeping on a zone read.

With the wide splits there’s a lot of potential running room out there for Sampson and Bishop to get into that space every once in a while, so why is every play up the middle or between the tackles?
My exact thoughts. I turned it off after about the 5th time of Samson running up the middle for no gain. If something's not working, why not try something different ? If you go back and look at our losses over the last 3 years the pattern is the same= run up the middle regardless of it getting no where. Our offense is fun, but it's too predictable and we don't adapt to game conditions

The play calling is what is questionable. The line has been a decent ( not excellent) job, the receivers are not as explosive as I expected, the backs are running well ( not elite), and the qb is throwing like a very talented FRESHMAN. However when nearly every run play is straight up the gut and one in three passes is the same screen thrown nearly at the sideline the defense doesn’t have to do too much guessing.

Offense has become terribly predictable against the talent in the conference, it's fun to spool up all kinds of yards in games that do not matter, but when the bright lights are on and the conference schedule is rolling, we futz and fiddle around like a bottom feeder in the conference, Heupel's lack of confidence in Nico last year is comparable to the lack of confidence this year
Watching the Vandy game, Clark Lee just made a statement in the college coaching world. He doesn't have the talent to beat an SEC on talent alone. He has to outcoach them. He was throwing old school wishbone at AL. Their DC didn't know what to do with it. I keep hearing Heupel is an offensive genius. Well when he had Hooker and Hyatt that wasn't so hard. Now what? We don't have a Hyatt on the team, but we do clearly have one of the best RB's in the SEC and he's not even being fully utilized.
