When CCM was hired the general reaction, myself included, was who the hell is this guy and will he have the chops to coach in the SEC?

I think the answer is a resounding YES!!

I really hope that TN can get into the NCAA for one very good reason, recruiting!

If we get in, you know that all the announcers will be singing CCM's praises for doing so much with so little, and that will have to help recruiting. :clapping:

Regardless how this season turns out, it is clear that CCM is a class guy who instills discipline and effort in his players, well done Coach! :hi:

Indeed. Great post!

Level headed basketball fans (non Bruce lovers / anti anything else) could see that if he practiced what he preached (which he has), that this would be a homerun. Defense wins championships and Martin understands that. I love his attitude and really believe Tennessee will be a feared defensive team when he gets to do more work and installs more of his system. Just like 'Cuse...everybody knows they'll see a zone everytime and they still can't do much with it. I love it!

I'd die if Coach K was here. I'd take Roy though! I don't really care for Brad Stevens or Bill Self but think Anthony Grant is pretty darn good.

Tom Izzo, Rick Pitino, Jim Boeheim... the list goes on and on of incredible coaches.

That being said i think we have an absolute winner and class act in CCM, he's up there with brad stevens, shaka smart, and anthony grant as far as young elite coaches are concerned

I am ok with everyone's rankings except for Woolridge, washpun, yemi. None of them should have been rated as high as they were.

Martin teaches discipline in every phase of the game and that is a winning method of coaching. The players obviously have bought in and respect him. That should be exciting to all Vols fans.

On a national level, how big of a story would it be if we made the tournament?

I don't think at first it'd be huge, but it'd grow rapidly.

IMO, we would be the hottest thing for media members as their upset picks. Many have said we play like a tournament team, we just have to get in.

I think if we get in you will see a lot of publicity for Tennessee, and in effect the whole story of last season to this season will be brought up.

IMO...it would be HUGE for Tennessee to make the tournament. Something Pastnet couldn't do in his first year the Memphis kids will notice!!!

If seeing Maymon's transformation has taught me anything, its that some players shouldn't be judged on limited minutes in their first year in a program.

I'm alright with writing off Woolridge. He has had four years and chances with two coaches to succeed and hasn't gotten it done. Washpun and Yemi just haven't played enough to make an accurate assessment. Furthermore, 3-star players outside of the top 150 (which they were) are generally going to be role players at a major university. I'm not sure what your expectations are for those two, but I wouldn't expect either of them to be more than that. The JaJuan Smith's and Jeremy Lin's of the recruiting world are few and far between.

Interesting to note on that list, is there is no one that really played above their ranking. That should tell you a little bit about the type of players that were being recruited by the former staffs. Athletes with some ability, and not basketball players with some athleticism.

Washpun has shown no signs, makanjoula has but he's a project. IMO a project that raw shouldn't be a 3*, but that's just my opinion.

Washpun I just don't see it happening. Maymon showed signs at Marquette, golden showed signs last year, McRae has shown flashes. All the people on that list atleast showed signs and hope, but washpun to me has shown nothing. As you said players rated where he was rated are role players at a major level. He is not a role player on a major level, thus the reason he had no major offers besides Tennessee.

Once aging just my opinion though.

We will see what everybody is saying about Martin if Vanderbilt kicks our ass again tomorrow. Martin's done a great job guys, but calm down.

I see what you're saying, but the three guys you use as examples all got more time to showcase themselves as freshman than Washoun has. I get that he has struggled in his opportunities, but those opportunities have been so limited that I don't think its fair to throw him out with the bath water based on two minutes of playing time here and there. Now he may wind up being awful. I fully expect that honestly based in his ranking and offer list, but I am willing to give him more than one season.

He saw plenty of opportunity the defrost 10-15 games to atleast show something.

I'm fine if he's given one more year to show something, because there aren't many recruits for '12 that'd be worth bringing in anyways.

However, if he shows nothing next year he should go. We could definitely use the extra scholarship for the '13 class.

On the same note...I see Stanton playing back up point over washpun.

Call me crazy and I know people will, but I wouldn't want another coach in the country (ok maybe coach K).

Same here. I was ecstatic when we hired him, and even more so now. Kind of concerned about our recruiting though. I want to see what he can do with great players, alongside of Stokes. Jordan is close to fitting that bill. The only thing Pearl has over Martin was his ability to recruit high caliber guys. CCM hasn't had enough time here so far for me to judge him, so I'm going to take the wait and see approach.

Bill Self? Roy Williams? Brad Stevens?

Brad Stevens is having a Hell of a year. He needs to his his conference tournament, or Butler isn't going dancing this year.
19-13, 11-7 (horizon league record). They aren't even on the bubble.

Coming off back to back championship game appearances, one would expect a down year. UCONN is likely out of the tourney as well barring a Big East tourney run. Stevens is still a good coach.

We play Candy on Saturday, not Friday. Even if we get our ass handed to us, (again)
I'm still a big Martin fan. I thought we would be 12th in the SEC, and have a record similar to Auburn last year. What CCM has done here this year is miraculous.
