The Tennessee-Alabama game was elevated by two legendary coaches, one on each side. That, and watching Howard Schnellenberger roam the sidelines put this strange question in my head: Who are the 5 coolest coaches of all time?

I have only been around for 31 years so give me a minute, and another beer.

I've always considered Joe Paterno pretty freaking cool. Although he has those huge glasses, he has other qualities. When he tucks his towel around his neck and into his jacket, it makes me laugh. His straight up Brooklyn accent is sweet, too. Too many things to name.

I once saw Al Groh coaching in a t-shirt. Not one of those fancy, sort of stylish t-shirts, but a plain gray shirt. I thought that was pretty cool. This was when he was with the Jets, but he's a college coach now... right? Last I heard he was sitll at Virginia, anyway.

Pretty hard to come up with "cool" coaches... but Rich Rodriguez, from what I've seen of him in press conferences and whatnot, seems pretty cool.

Steve Spurrier
Oh, how I wanted to say SS. I had a fairly lengthy paragraph pounded out qualifying how I can't stand him and if I had no ties to Tennessee or any other SEC team that I would think he's pretty cool. :mega_shok:

1. Barry Switzer-The Cool Hand Luke of college football.
2. Jimmy Johnson-Kicked a$$, took names, didn't care what anyone thought.
3. John McKay-Possible the best quotes of all time.
4. Danny Ford-His dumb farmer act fooled people for years. The man was almost a Rhodes Scholar, for God's Sake.
5. Howard Schnellenberger-The most self assured man on the planet.

Hat, you blew me away. I can't argue with your selections. SS has always had high marks in my book. I love/hate the guy. But there is no doubt in my mind he is one of the best I have ever seen in college football.

John Gruden
Bill Cowher
Tony Dungy
Bill Parcells
Joe Pa

I like pro coaches for some reason, and Joe Pa is classic, he kind of looks like my grandpa too.

You'll get no debate from me regarding the brilliance of Steve Spurrier.

I think TN really missed out on dynasty potential by snubbing him out of high school.

Joe Paterno
Bobby Bowden
Steve Spurrier (mad respect)
Lloyd Carr (? Michigan's coach)
It's a good question... lol

On another note, I can name numerous lame coaches:
Kirk Ferentz (Iowa)
Ron Zook (Illinois)
Urban Meyer
Tommy Bowden
Dan McCarney (Iowa State)
Oh God, I can't remember Oklahoma's coach name
And LARRY COKER, the guy can't keep his players under control!!!

In recent history...

Steve Spurrier - One liners and great results at Florida.

Pete Carroll - Keeps things loose but still gets the wins.

Dan Hawkins - One thing comes to mind. Back when he coaches Boise State, during the Broncos trip to Georgia, Zabransky had a terrible first half, and Boise started a different QB the second half. When the sideline reporter chick asked why he did that, he responded almost pissed, "Did you watch the first half?" He makes my list just for that.

Barry Alvarez - 'speck.

Joe Paterno - Always great to see him coach.

3) Jimmy Johnson.....hair never moved and that's cool
4) Johnny Majors....brought us back to respectablility and he did it while drunk, doesnt get much cooler than that
5) Vince Dooley....to be such an arrogent a**hole is pretty cool

This is a great thread. I thinbk it depends on your definiiton of "cool." If its "don't give a damn what people think" then I guess you go with Paterno, Bowden, Spurrier, as many have posted. They say and/or do what they want.

I think there are many "cooler" coaches in college Bball, though. Bob Knight sure doesn't give a rat's petutie what you think. Tarkanian comes to mind for that, too.

I actually think Bruce Pearl is headed in that direction.

  1. Bobby Dodd-Georgia Tech
  2. Paul W. Bryant-Alabama
  3. Johnny Majors-Tennessee
  4. Ray Graves-Florida
  5. Rush Propst-Hoover High School
I know Propst is a high school coach, but watch Two-A-Days on MTV and you will know why he is awesome.

I am somewhat surprised Majors isn't getting more love on this thread. The guy preached having a good time and fun on the football field.

However, as with most topics, Bobby Dodd wins.

Lloyd Carr is about as cool as a Murder She Wrote marathon on the Lifetime Channel.

I'm not sure about my Top 5 but Jackie Sherrill has to be on my list. .600 winning percentage over 26 years at some "ugly sister" programs. Stayed at Tony Dorsett's parents' home as a houseguest (allegedly in Tony's room) to get TD's commit to Pitt. Started the "12th Man" at Texas A&M. And, of course, the bull castration episode at MissSt. When I think of brass balls I think of guys like Coach Sherrill. Definitely one cool cat!
