Don't forget Woody Hayes. Who else has pulled off punching an opposing teams player, and yet still remains almost universally admired. Plus you can always spot a "Woody" in the stands at most OSU games, and it's not because of the girls.

Speaking of Woody Hayes, anyone else saw the guy that dresses up like Woody at the Ohio State games? He looks just like him!

This is a great thread. I thinbk it depends on your definiiton of "cool." If its "don't give a damn what people think" then I guess you go with Paterno, Bowden, Spurrier, as many have posted. They say and/or do what they want.

I think there are many "cooler" coaches in college Bball, though. Bob Knight sure doesn't give a rat's petutie what you think. Tarkanian comes to mind for that, too.

I actually think Bruce Pearl is headed in that direction.
LG is now disqualified from this thread via use of the word "petutie."

i got in on this late but i gotta say i read the biography of neyland and he is on the top of my list even though he would laugh at today's brand of football and football players.
2. majors-i love whiskey and ut, so he's gotta be up here he would be #1 if he won a nc. definately the one coach i would want to watch a game with. johnny if you got the time i got the bottle.
3. tom osborne-going for 2 in the orange bowl vs miami when 1 gets you a nc, just cause you play to win the game is pretty cool, even though they lost the game and the nc.
4. bobby bowden-as charming as bill clinton, i mean i hate fsu and he makes me chuckle in almost every interview he does.
5. ty willingham-i dont know why but i found myself routing for nd when he was coach, just seems like a good guy to me.

I have to put Erk Russell's name in the hat. I always thought that Rick Nuheisel sp. was cool. Pat Hill is also pretty cool. His willingness to be a punching bag is noble.

I agree on Erk. Pat Hill's act would be more appealing to me if they weren't about 1-77 since the USC game last year.

Ron Zook.

Not the brightest coach in the country...but any coach that will march with his players to a frat house to pick a fight, is pretty cool. Stupid, no doubt...but cool in a way.

Come to think of it, he may have been a great fit at Miami.

No, he wouldn't. He doesn't win.

The Zooker's not a winner...I can't argue with that.

I'll bet though, that if Zook had inherited the goldmine that Butch Davis left Larry Coker, he could have won just as often as Coker has. Not saying that Zook is a winner, just saying that he wouldn't be a downgrade from the current coach at the U...

...which allows me to segue to my next topic. Who replaces Coker at Miami at the end of the year?

I'm going to say Greg Schiano, but for some reason there's a great deal of support down here for BC coach Tom O'Brien.

ERK RUSSELL (RIP) any man that will headbutt people with helmets till he bleeds is pretty cool, and who makes a program with a $200 budget and in two years makes them national champions is great in my book.
Bill Cowher-just because he looks mean as hell
Joe Pa- any guy that dont care if the game is going on and jets cause hes gotta go is awesome, and his big glasses can see the future
Paul Johnson-I met him when he was coach at Georgia Southern, and i was being recruited to play, great guy, great coach,,,
General Robert Neyland-No explanation needed

To me, Dan Hawkins is the antithesis of cool. He looks like some movie character that would be given a wedgie- perhaps hung from a high object by his waistband.
Watching Boise when he was over in Idaho was neat, though. Dan Hawkins gettin' a bunch of farmboys from Idaho, and eastern Oregon/Washington to play on some blue turf. Fun stuff.
