Questions about this recruiting class

yep, good comparison. you'll see enough to be able to say good things about the future....i believe that.

and the best thing is, i think this staff is recruiting, and will recruit, at a level we haven't seen since the mid 90's. Kiffin's class was full of names and stars, but not a lot of substance. i don't see that being the case with this staff.

Agree! And that's all I really want this year. Give me something to hang my hat on that says this is the guy who will take us to the top. Not necessarily in the W-L, although I do think at least making a bowl is important. Let me see quality play from the QB position and the OL. Let me see receivers who run good routes. Let me see LBs who are in position and don't miss tackles. Let me see DBs who don't get beat deep. I'd be thrilled with that and a top 5 class going in to 19.

I get what you are saying. I was more focused on the 3 star backs like Kelly and Banks coming in. When Hurd left and Kamara went down fans were worried about fall off. Kelly came in and did an amazing job. That was due to CRG recruiting and his work with these guys. Overall the RB's he has recruited have been the foundation to this team Ibelieve, yet under used by what there skill sets were or are by Jones offensive scheme. Ex: Hurd vs Northwestern we saw what he could really do if the oline blocked like in a pro style game. Our offense looked like we could have won against anybody that day.

Banks is 4*

the schedule this year is tough. but i do think it's important to win at least 1 of the Aub, Bama, FL, GA games. that'd be a good sign. FL seems to be the most likely.

that said, he's had to defend auburn at GA and Bama and will be familiar with the personnel and the scheme.

so who knows. it's january. long way to go.

I'd expect recruiters like Pruitt and Sherrer, from top recruiting programs, to have better connections with top defensive recruits.

Don't underrate OL, the game starts in "the pit".

Unless you're Georgia playing Oklahoma.

sounds stupid in a 54-48 game, but i think you definitely have to credit GA's defense in getting them to the point they COULD win that game. those 3 and outs early in the 3rd qtr were absolutely required for them to get back in that game. and in overtime, forcing fg attempts with an extremely short field....they weren't dominant for the game...but they came up huge when they absolutely had to.

Let me correct myself,
I meant where are the quality skill players in this class? All we got is a 3 star qb, a walkon qb,a tightend, and Alontae Taylor. I am not talking about linemen. We need guys who can score tds.
Everybody wants to blame the defense for 2017, but they outplayed the offense. Need I remind all of you that our offense went a whole month without scoring an offensive touchdown? Is that the defense's fault?
Please tell me we have some 4 or 5 star receivers or rbs on the radar. If not, we are in deep doo-doo. The players already on the roster could not find the endzone last year. Why would that be different this year?

Well for one thing most of the highly rated offensive prospects signed in the early signing period. We are still in on receiver Jacob Copeland (4-star) #1 WR in Florida (Top 10 WR overall)

There is still several other (4-Star) receivers and offensive lineman across the country that are unsigned that I wouldn't be surprised to see Tennessee try and get to visit over the next couple of weeks.

The focus is on guys like Defensive backs Taylor-Stuart & Griffin (both 5-Star, Top 5 rated CBs) and (4-star) linebackers JJ Peterson & Quay Walker both are Top 5 OLB all four of those guys could come in and start right away or see significant playing time.

I think we have some pretty good talent at the skill positions on offense right now, the coaching/offensive play calling was just terrible last year. I think the biggest thing offense wise for this recruiting class is to really beef up the depth on our O-Line, which is what Pruitt is doing. We're going to get a couple of quality skill position players in on offense is this recruiting class as well.

As far as what we have now Chandler, Calloway and Johnson all can be really good for us next year and beyond.

Some more thoughts:

#1- Defense is overrated. This isnt the 50s. Today's game is an offensive game. If you dont have an offense that can score consistently you are going to struggle to win even if you have a really good defense. Last year's UT team is a good example of this. Contrary to what people say, the defense was solid (wont say it was good). If you look at the games, we started getting gashed in the second half of most games, but held out okay in the first half of games. That is the classic result of a poor offense that goes 3 and out all the time. The defense gets tired with no help! Yet, people still want to blame the defense. News flash, we couldnt move the ball on UMass. Our offense was the problem.

#2- It seems people are betting on the new coaching staff having a huge impact on the players already on the roster. Keep in mind that both of the new coordinators are very inexperienced. We have no idea how an OC who has never called plays before will perform on the big stage in the SEC.

If you were the coach we would be even longer suffering. Defense still wins championships.

If you have a great defense an an descent offense you have a always chance to win.

Since the BCS started in 1998, there has only been one national champion that ranked outside the top 30 in scoring defense. 1 since 1998. Defense still wins championships. And I have no idea what yer other thoughts were because I stopped reading after yer thought of "Defense is overrated."

Defense: #1 vs # 6
Offense: #27 vs #31

offense may win games, but defense wins championships as the above proves yet again (bama listed first on both, then Georgia)

1. Did you even watch the Sugar Bowl? That was a very good offense that CJP's defense shut down. I'll just leave it at that. Defense most certainly does win championships.

2. Helton had quite a bit of the play calling responsibility at USC. Their offense looked inept without him. All he needs to do is make one of these QB's serviceable. Nobody is expecting us to be Alabama next year, but I do think we can see a significant improvement in quite a few players.

Completely contradictory to the NC game that is about to be played. That is a D4H-level observation.

The focus needs to be on defense first. UT hasn't stopped anyone in years. The next focus is offensive line. If they'd actually block someone occasionally UT could probably move the ball a bit consistently.

they've stopped tackling. entirely.
