Even though he might not have been one of the guys you wanted, I thought I remembered you thinking it was a good hire at the time.
I thought it was a good hire and said as much. That's where comparisons to Wade Houston, Jerry Green, amd Buzz Peterson are relevant. By the standards set by previous hires, it most certainly was a good one. I simply think there were a number of available options that would have been superior.

Those assumptions come from those who really do want him fired and the threads listed below:

-Pearl's Final Drive Down 75
-The Pembroke Postgame Report: Start The Bus Edition
-Now That Bruce is Obviously Going to be Fired

I agree no one is above criticism, but those calling for his job are a bit extreme. When you get those arguments from people who want him fired, you get the arguments you listed above.

Are you just judging those threads by the titles?

Hat, can you refresh me on some of the other coaching candidates that were available at the time of the Pearl hire? I simply can't remember who else we were considering.

Mike Anderson and Gregg Marshall were the two candidates, other than Pearl, most associated with the UT job at the time. Bob Huggins and Bobby Gonzalez would both have taken the Tennessee job, but the illustrious, now former. UT president John Petersen was concerned what his pointy headed friends in academia would think if he hired either of them.

I can't say that I really noticed John Petersen ever actually caring about academics very much.

EDIT: Ah, you said "academia," not academics. Not the same thing at all.

He is our coach and we need to stand behind him.

I agree, however, it's ok to give an opinion if you disagree with his decisions or whatever. I for one love CBP and I love his enthusiasm for Tn. Tn basketball is way more exciting since he was hired. We need a pg and we need more focus and discipline from the team.
GO VOLS!

Given that there were a number of guys who Tennessee could have hired that I consider superior coaches to Pearl, why would I have liked the hire?

I'm curious, I did'nt join VN until 2007, so I don't know the other candidates. Can u fill me in please? Ty.

I thought I mentioned them earlier in the thread, but here it is again. Mike Anderson and Gregg Marshall were the other candidates most closely linked to the job. Bob Huggins and Bobby Gonzalez would have taken the job, but the then university president was a moron.

How soon we forget how bad we were before Pearl came and I suspect this past year will be one of his worst which isn't to bad.

WTF kind of username is that?

Regardless, your comment is one I'd expect from someone on this site with a Vandy handle.
