Quitting Smoking

Dip or chewing tobacco has more nicotine than cigarettes and that is what you are addicted to. That is not the way to stop nicotine, it only changes the delivery mechanism of your drug.

There is absolutely a "habit" element to stopping, i.e. something in your hand, a lighter you mess with, etc, but the problem is nicotine and the best way to get over it is to simply stop using the crap. Patches waste your money and prolong your withdrawal, that is all they are good for.

Cold turkey. Gut it out. In three days, the nicotine will be out of your system. Every day after that, you are fighting a mental game. Try to not take it out on those around you. You can use some accountability and a support group, try one of these if you are serious about stopping:

For Dip/Chew/etc: KillTheCan.org - A Resource To Quit Dip, Snuff & Chewing Tobacco (no patches / no "easing off", you just stop and suffer for a while with others in the same boat)

For Smokers: try this one, they have a daily roll call (accountability aspect) - Quit Smoking Message Board

Thanks for links.

I am posting this in hopes to find possible support/connect with ex smokers that went through this process.
It would be great to hear your experience.
I cannot "Vape"...lung problems. I am on the patch and any candy that fits into my mouth. It's been 23 hours since last cigarette. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can do it!!

First 2 weeks are the hardest. After that it does get better. It's really hard but oh so worth it. I smoked for about 18 years. I was up late one night reading a book and realized I only had 1 cigarette left. I really wanted to smoke it, but realized if I did, I wouldn't have one for the morning. I'm sure you know how bad that would be...so I smoked it and decided I would quit. Now I know everyone is different, but I decided not to tell anyone. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it especially with the guilt if I failed. So I got up the next morning and took it one hour at a time. It worked for me.
Now my husband, (boyfriend at the time) may have a different story. He was/is a non smoker but is used to it as his whole family smoked but him. So he really didn't notice until about day 4...as I slowly was turning into a stark raving mad bi**h!! About a week and a half in, he told me he was either buying me a carton of cigarettes or taking me to the Dr to get the patch, he couldn't take it any more! It was the like the worst case of PMS imaginable. Of course they told me the nicotine was already out of my system and they wouldn't give me one.
Just suggested lots of gum chewing, hard candy, carrot sticks, keeping a pencil in my hand.
I came through it. Food tastes SO much better now, even beer after a long while. I feel amazing. It's the best thing you can do for yourself and your family.
Best of luck to you!

Search online for quit meter apps for your phone or computer. They are a really neat way to keep track of money saved by not smoking.
Reward yourself when you meet goals. My brother would take himself out every year on his quit anniversary for a big steak dinner. You deserve it!

Day 8. Its hit and miss with becoming "super jerk" and cravings. Have only almost said "EFF it" once after trying to find coffee filters at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has definitely become on the "stay away from" list. Been on the Quit smoking message board(thx f77f00).
Hope everybody has a great Thanxsgiving. I'm thankful for VN.

I have been using these cinnamon toothpicks and patch. Monday mourning at work, without realizing what I was doing, bit straight through the toothpick and damned near choked on it...LOL! Just gotta laugh, at some point.
Thank you for sharing experience.

It can be beat and you can beat it. Just don't accept failure and kick nicotine's ass once and for all.

Super jerk phase will pass. Cravings can hit you by surprise long after you have quit and the nicotine is out of your system. The mental aspect is the worst part. Physical addiction withdrawal is brutal but over quickly.
