"It's really an amazing streak and a tribute to all of the players and coaches who've contributed to the Lady Vols' rich tradition of excellence," Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said. "The results this season haven't been what we wanted, but I assure you my staff and I are working extremely hard to ensure that our players reach their potential and, in turn, help our program attain the level of success we expect at Tennessee."

The Lady Vols streak of 565 consecutive weeks in The Associated Press women's basketball poll ended Monday as Tennessee fell out of the Top 25. The streak started Feb. 17, 1985.

If they're working so hard to correct the issue, then why has the team actually gotten worse as the season has progressed?

We BUSTED for 18 in the first half against a bad LSU team. Maybe it was because they surprised us with an effective zone defense....er, we've only faced a zone defense in practically every game this year! Maybe it was because our most accurate shooter had a bad game. Nope--she sits on the bench all game on a team that can't shoot and score! Maybe it's because one of our best free throw shooters missed a big one late. Nope, we had a WORST free-throw shooter in the game late and she missed two!

Of Holly's post-game LSU quotes, this one stood out to me:

I thought she started to attack the basket and started to take shots that Diamond (DeShields) can make. She rebounded, decided she wanted to play and was a real bright spark for us today.

I don't know, that seems like a backhanded comment--decided she wanted to play--which implies that Diamond has not wanted to play at other times. Perhaps it just another of Holly's malapropisms but on the other hand, maybe there is some friction between player and coach....

"The results this season haven't been what we wanted".... YA think?

This is about as sincere as my ex-wife... I would expect to see grief, tears and the most absolute promise of a turnaround from a coach who just experienced such a fall when they are responsible for the incredulous drop of this esteemed program to the point it now stands in.

quit being a diplomat and let the fans know it really affects you. NOT exasperates you (we can already see that)... But some real grief Holly. My word... Doesn't she realize the magnitude of what has transpired. In one season, she has erased much history and made several new entries into the record books, that very possibly, she may not have wanted to be associated with.

When an AAU coach like myself believes... NOT thinks,,, But, truly believes it when he writes:"I could have done a better job than the UT coach"...it's time to replace that coach...Nuff Said

Here,Holly, look at how a 12u team moves the ball, plays man to man defense and subs 5 in 5 out in an AAU tourney championship. (and BOTH of these teams won four and lost zero to get to this game...

Holly hasn't been working very hard or this basketball team would be a lot better than they were in game one.
She has even sent Dean and other Assistants to press conferences and said the difference in the team now and at the beginning of the season was night and day. Meaning were a lot better now. Were not any better were about the same as we were at the beginning of the season.
We could have beaten LSU but Holly chose to start a lineup unable to score from the perimeter and they were actually two of our worst passers and we scored 18 points. We'll have to keep putting up with this for another season nothing ever ends easy unless you got leaders at the top that want accept this type of play. I think Dave Hart is more than content to accept it and so it will go on for at least another season and if it is like this one then a change will be made.

Very telling comment..... and also something she shouldn't have said.... why air your dirty laundry for all to see.....no matter what the problem is..... just solve it!!!

Holly also needs to confess to her bad decision making all season. She has made as many turnovers as any player we have but she never puts any blame on herself. She needs to go to coach 101 and get some game time management experience. Anybody who watched the Texas A&M game saw Holly commit about 12 turnovers in the second half with stupid personnel decisions and terrible use of timeout.
I'm sure Caldwell appreciates her leaving Russell in the game so they could foul her. Caldwell needed a win badly and thanks to Holly she got it. She may use that win and the many injuries they've had to get another season out of LSU.

That is exactly what I thought as well. It was an interesting and potentially revealing slip.

I really don't see much to comment on about the OP quote.

There she is just reiterating standard coach speak. There is not much else she could really say given the circumstances. In a press conference, no coach is going to confess to having screwed up royally and words will not change the past so, we are given "we're gonna work hard to turn it around" cliches.

Holly's made a lot of dopey, head-scratching remarks this year. After barely surviving Ole Miss last week in a game where we hit 38% of our shots, scored 57 points and had another 17 turnovers against a 10-16 team at home, she had this response to a question:

(On holding onto the lead late in the game)
"We haven't been doing that. We haven't held on. It speaks volumes of how far we've come. Now we'd love to not lose a lead. We have to get better in our zone-offense attack, and we have. I think the ball gets stuck in our hands for some reason, and we'll go back and watch tape and try and correct that. We could have folded, and we didn't."

She spoke as if the team had made some kind of remarkable progress based on one game. If she honestly deluded herself into believing what was coming out of her mouth, that shows a disturbing level of misapprehension.

Warlick, in her talk with the media today, seemed a little loopy--more so than usual. Dazed and a little frazzled. She never has anything specific to say about the basketball team. Lot of vague generalities amounting to nothing: "We're going to get on the court and get back to work." She must have said that four times.

None of the media people--who never ask any real pointed questions--asked why Russell was on the floor late, or why our offense against zone hasn't improved, or why the best shooter on a bad shooting/bad scoring team seldom plays. Maybe it's because they know Warlick will say nothing insightful. I think the DeShields situation has been a real problem for her and the coaches this year--it just has. Warlick has made a lot of dumb moves, the team has not improved, players have not improved, but DD has been a real issue with this team. When the most talented player on your team is sitting half the game, there are pretty serious issues between coaches and players. That whole situation has been a major factor--and I too took immediate not of HW saying after the LSU game that DD "decided" to play.

I have wondered for some time now why the media folks are not asking her the questions that absolutely beg for answers. It's like they are protecting her for some reason.
Time to be a reporter. Ask her why and keep on refining the questions till she has to come up with explanations that either show her competency or cluelessness. She's had too long to give nothing answers.

As I listened to the game, it seemed to me that DD was making more effort than she has in most games. So I see where CHW's remark came from. And, game before last, I saw DD smile at a teammate!

I really think accepting DD and treating her as the savior of the team (along with Tea) really set this year off wrong. You had two players who were immediately given significant playing time at the beginning of the season who had not yet shown that they deserved that playing time. I think that was a slap in the face to the other players. On top of that, I am guessing there was some "me and you" since DD and Tea had played together so much, which would not have helped the development of team unity.

All this is supposition on my part; it's as good as anyone else's suppositions about this team.

I don't know how much injury is factoring in to the "decided to play" comment. DD is a terrific player when well but I am not sure she has been accepted as the team leader. Thus team is too talented to play like they do and there is a systemic problem.

The ladies play at times like they had never played together and Holy has not a clue to bring them together.

It is time for outside help. Bring in a professional for a "fix" or hire new coach and staff.

Speaking of quotes, consider this one Rick Barnes made in the coaches, our culture is great press conference:

We don't want the stereotype that there's something out there that's not true.

I have no idea what that could possibly mean. Holly may stutter and talk in vague cliches but at least you can parse her sentences for a semblance of meaning.....

Holly took a page out of Fulmer's playbook, "Working Like Heck" as they glug, glug, glug drown and destroy the program. Hey, if Fulmer had another 10 years he could have turned the program around--NOT.

Not sure a psychiatrist can solve this problem.
