"Because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself."

That speech had tons of wonderful lines, delivered eloquently and passionately, but I think this was the best.

yes - a great line. right down the middle of the republican platform, which is all about the greater good - you know, universal health care, public education, welfare, etc.

btw, Tom Ridge just called McCain "John Bush."

Welfare just does all kinds of good.

Since when are UHC and Welfare for thw greater good? Both programs hurt the majority to help the minority and the long trm ramifications have proven disastrous. If those are your platforms, I understand your love for Obama.

I am just ready for a politician to stand up and tell people to "get off your ass, put down the bong/beer, get off the porch and find a freakin' job and we won't need all of these damn social programs that are dragging this country down to third-world country status!!!!!!" I would vote for that person in a heartbeat!!!

Did anyone watch MSNBC after the speech?? I was watching fox, but I knew what they were going to say so I switched over to MSNBC and it showed Andrea Mitchel down on the floor when all the balloons were falling and everyone in the crowd was piling up the balloons around her so the screen shot was just this head and all the baloons stacked around her and more balloons being thrown her way. It was HILARIOUS and CLASSIC

I beleive in helping people who try to help there selves. I work 40+ hours a week and am required to submit to random drug screens. Why shouldn't anyone recieving welfare or related benifits be required to do the same. Lets have some freakin accountability!!!

Nice post!!!! I could go on about this crap for days. If someone is really trying to help themselves, I will help them to. If they are just digging in my pockets, it pisses me off!!!

The whole welfare sysytem is a very touchy subject for me I refrain from going too deep into all of my opinions on it just because of the mood I get in because of it....

I agree. I must say that it really saddens me to see a couple of parents so hell bent on riding the system that they are in effect raising the next generation of free-loaders as opposed to instilling values in their children. Get a job people!! They are everywhere!!!!

It is about the greater good - just a different way of getting there. :eek:k:

I definitely disagree with McCain on this one. Happiness comes when you realize the greatest cause in your life is yourself. The more people do this the better off the country will be.

How do you figure that is going to help?

wait - are you about the greater good? How about you, BPV? How about OE? I seem to remember a rather lengthy discussion awhile back about how the greater good was evil, or something to that extent.

So what do you think about McCain trying to claim this ground? Desperate plea for independent votes, or is he really a Democrat? B/c I tell you what, the Republican Party I know, the ones some of my friends and family members vote for, certainly doesn't care about the greater good in the context of government.

You clearly didn't understand that discussion then. I don't think anyone views the greater good as evil.

The context of government cannot be removed - the conservative view centers (or at least my understanding) on the notion that the greater good is best pursued by individuals -- it isn't delivered by the government. I think the line by Huckabee hints at the idea. "I'm not a Republican because I was born rich. I'm a Republican because I didn't want to wait around for the government to save me."

Welfare for example is a well-intentioned but destructive force IMHO. In my view is has been a net negative with regard to the greater good. For those it helped, there are more it hurt.

If you believe Republicans don't care about the less fortunate or the greater good, you are misinformed on Republican ideology.
