RAID LSU! Unbelievable....

Actually, Rivals had it at #35. To put it in persepective, that was coming off a year in which we won the East, yet the lowest class since then was #21 on Rivals. Yes, through 1 year of Kiffin, 3 of Dooley, and 3 of Jones, we've still not had a class within 10 spots of that one. Piss poor effort there IMO.

IMO the biggest reason for Fulmer's recruiting problems in '06 and '08 were staff changes.

Sanders & Pat Washington firings in '05
Cutcliffe, Roper & Luke leaving for Duke in '07

The relationships these coaches had with recruits caused several kids to go elsewhere. Again JMO

Biggest mistake by far was the Clawson hire. Terrible fit and bad timing. Internal promotion (Adkins) would have been better.

Spot on about Clawson - tried too hard to copy UFs spread offense without the players for it

With the news that it's likely Miles will be canned, who will give UT a second look in their currently top rank recruiting class?

I literally can't believe they are going to fire him. This is probably the most unjust and unwarranted firing in the history of all sports.

Wtf?

If Tech beats Georgia tomorrow the college coaching world will be wide open!!

I like CLM but he is 12-13 in his last 25 SEC games and he's reloading not rebuilding and he has more SEC talent than any other team currently in the NFL. He's sadly underachieved the past few years...relatively speaking.

12-13? He's 15-10 in his last 25 SEC games by my count and 19-12 in conference games over the past 4 seasons.

He's still buzzing roughly .500 in the SEC with premium talent. So people paying him multi millions expect their money's worth and they aren't getting it. And they are willing to double his salary for him to leave.

ESPN has LSU as the No. 1 class. Crazy that the coach is being fired.

Doesn't matter. LSU recruits itself. This is a great year for talent in the state of Louisiana so they're getting the #1 recruiting class regardless of who the coach is.

Les is being fired for UNDERACHIEVING given the talent at LSU. LSU has produced more NFL players than Alabama. As a result, Les has no excuse for being middle in the pack in the SEC West the last 3 years.

Given the talent in Louisiana, he should at worst be trading SEC West titles with Saban. Not losing the last 5 divisional crowns.

Is Miles really that good of a coach though?

I think firing him at this stage is ridiculous as everyone has said, but what exactly makes him a "good" coach? If he has great assistants, his teams look fierce, but without top of the line assistant's his teams are very middling. The only things that really stand out about Miles are his likeliness to try a crazy/trick play and his luck.

If UGA hired Miles, I wouldn't be anymore scared of him then I am Richt.

Miles has a guy named Nick Saban to owe his "greatness" to. Much easier to maintain a program than build one from scratch.

Right now we should raid Georgia, USCe, LSU. Unbelievable chance to improve our recruiting with uncertainty coming at those three. LSU recruits itself, but some of those kids had relationships with Miles. Meaning the parents of the kids also trusted Miles. If any were UT leans before, this is a great chance to get in their ears. same for Georgia recruits.

CPF did some great things while he was the coach at UT and I have much respect for him. The situation at LSU with CLM and the firing of CPF are completely different. Miles has never had a losing season and Fulmer had two losing seasons in his last four years. Additionally, Fulmer's recruiting fell off big time in the later years, Miles not so much. Respectively disagree.

Once again I see someone saying fulmers recruiting had fell off, and once again I will show you that this is simply not true.

Seriously? No blue font? Underachieving? You must have extraordinarily high standards because FSU has lost 5 games in nearly 4 complete seasons with an NC and a playoff appearance last season. We should be so lucky.

Maybe a little context is appropriate: I would take FSU's record and national title over the same time period for UT in a heartbeat. In other words, if Butch could recreate Jimbo's run at FSU over the same period of time, that would be great and I would be very happy with that outcome. But, FSU has, arguably, had as talented of rosters as any team in the country (potentially the most talented) and the ACC is inarguably weaker than the SEC (it is arguably the weakest of all of the Power Five conferences). Thus, 10-4 in 2010, 9-4 in 2011, and 12-2 in 2012 isn't very good in context. His run of 14-0 in 2013 with a national title and 13-1 in 2014 is unquestionably great, but, again, it was in the ACC. And, he is currently 9-2 this year and all of these records are from the ACC in which Clemson has been the only real competition with Miami and VT down. For example, Duke has been able to win division titles in this same time. So it boils down to this: do you think that Jimbo can win the SEC when he has to go through Alabama, Ole Miss, and Arkansas in the West and the permanent rival is UF when Jimbo will not enjoy the stark talent advantage that he has had every year at FSU?

You conveniently left off 2008 at #35.
Since then:
2009 #10 Fulmer/Kiffin
2010 #9 Kiffin/Dooley
2011 #13 Dooley
2012 #17 Dooley
2013 #21 Dooley/Jones
2014 #5 Jones
2015 #5 Jones
2016 TBD

Average ranking '02 - '08 was #14
Average ranking '09 - '15 was #11. And keep in mind that the program was on autopilot for the majority of that period from 2009 to 2015. I really like Fulmer and respect what he's done, but stats don't lie.

Do those changes even compare to the staff changes that took place from 2009 to 2015? We actually have a higher average ranking during that period than we do from 2002 to 2008.

Look at those classes for Fulmer's later years - they weren't good no matter the ranking. He was taking chances late in the cycle on guys with grade or behavior issues that other teams passed on despite a high star rating. We ended up with horrible attrition, particularly from the higher rated prospects. That's a huge reason our roster was in such bad shape when Dooley took over.

Those Dooley classes were badly overrated.

And some of Fulmer's classes weren't? I'm not trying to bash the guy, but take away some of the 5* from his classes that never lived up to the hype (i.e. Brooks, Vinson, etc) and those classes were not as good as they appeared either.

What was our 2008 ranking? While we are at it, let's look at that 2007 class. Here are all of the 4 and 5 star players in that class. Looking back, was it really the 3rd best class in the country?

Chris Donald Bust
Kenny O'Neal Bust
Brent Vinson Had meaningful snaps-didn't really live up to 5 star status
Eric Berry One of the greatest players in Tennessee history
Ben Martin Injured-Bust
Lennon Creer Transferred
Donald Langley Transferred
Gerald Jones Good player
Darris Sawtelle Bust
Ahmad Paige Did he even play?
Nevin McKenzie Average Player
Rolando MelanconBust
Chris Walker Good Player
B.J. Coleman Transferred
Rae Sykes DE Bust
DeAngelo Willingham Average Player

I would fire butch jones and hire les miles in a second

Really? Have you looked at the top 4 lately? We were the last team to beat, no destroy, Undefeated Iowa and have 4th qtr. loses of games we could have won to Alabama and Oklahoma. This young Vol team is turning the corner right before our eyes and you want to "Fahr" Butch. You might want to rethink that.

MrVolton..I absolutely agree about Fulmers classes, but I was thinking about our current team really. How Dools total incompetence has caused such long lasting problems. I really don't see how his classes were ranked even that high. You have to have some serious misevaluation of talent to screw it up that bad.
