In the news, the city of Atlanta has experienced multiple water main breaks at the same time. Thousands without water, boil water advisories, days of repairs. The mayor has announced a request to the Federal Government for billion$ to upgrade the city water system. Some of the pipes are more than 100 years old. Multiple city administrations in a row have neglected foreseeable service work on the water system, failing to fund reserves and diverting funds to projects that earned political points with constituents. The buck has been passed until the unfunded tab is more than a $billion. The present administration openly admits that local funding would be catastrophic, and stick out their hands to the Fed. The deferred work on the water system was known. A quiet campaign to grab a portion of infrastructure bill buck$ could have been executed prior to the recent breaks. But, Noooo… Now, with their pants around their ankles, they publicly declare that only a Federal bailout can solve the problem. 🙄

That really does suck. You hope a city "leader" would meet the bare minimum of obligation to the people...both today and for the future. Whether Fed or local money is used, the water rates are about to see a dramatic increase.

Ideally, Atlantians should enjoy the consequences of being seduced by corrupt, self serving leaders. It's the only way they will learn to choose wisely in the future.

I say I’m a recovering alcoholic.
I don’t think I’m cured. Just currently sober for 16 years
Congrats! I have been sober for almost 15 years myself after roughly 30 years of serious drinking. My sobriety wasn't even my idea, I had an encounter with the Lord and that was taken from me. I have been addicted to most everything over the years. Alcohol, sex, porn, gambling and food are the big ones. The gambling was pretty easy to beat as was the sex and porn. The alcohol was an amazing encounter. I was coming home after a night of shooting pool, drinking, and winding up in bed with some woman I met that evening. It was a monsoon and I came upon a car in a dirch. The folks were standing in the rain trying to figure out how to get the car out. I stopped well away from them and did nothing. I was in a Jeep, 4x4, with a winch. I could have had them out in no time, but I feared the law was on the way and I would get busted for DWI. So I made a hasty exit. As I am leaving, I heard an audible voice say" You are a coward. This ends now". I haven't had a drink since nor had the urge to. That was in 2009.
Food became my addiction, which seems like the least destructive thing I could be addicted to. Yeah I put on like 40 lbs, but my health was still good and all was well. Fast forward to this spring and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. And the food addiction is not even close to possible to maintain. Food is no longer an option. So, if addicts are never cured and only bounce to a new addiction, I have a very real fear of what is going to rise up out of my flesh and try to take over.
Sorry for the long story.

This is just the way that my own (odd) brain looks at it, but I think of those who were using addictively but now aren't as "in remission." Just as if they have had certain types of cancers that have been treated and are currently not showing any evidence of active disease, but need to be on the lookout for recurrence. (Some cancers do get pronounced as "cured" after X number of years, but not all.)

And one thing that IMO isn't discussed/acknowledged enough is that those who are addicted to/ heavily abusing mind-altering substances (alcohol and drugs) but no longer using are often stuck in a part-way there stage known as "dry drunk" - they are no longer drinking or drugging, but they still have destructive attitudes and approaches to life and can frankly be royal PITA's to be around. In terms of 12-step programs, they only got partway through the steps.

Maybe Fani will bring charges against all the elected officials from the last 25 years for dereliction of duties….. if she has time

I’m trying to use my evils for good. I too have run the gamut of addiction. So if I’m going to be addicted……diet and exercise it is.

In future, to respond like this, please carry the quote to the appropriate PF thread (eg the one about the trial).

No surprise, Atlanta = Baltimore of the south.

Sounds like Memphis and Jackson MS....

I'm sure ATL is similar. Instead of investing in infrastructure, the govt owned utility has hired hundreds of worthless people working in administrative jobs that aren't needed
as a reward for political favors....
