Gary Sousa, the University of Tennessees longtime director of bands who spoke out last week against what he saw as the encroachment of marketing and athletics on game-day band functions, is on administrative leave for the rest of this semester.
UT announced Sousas paid leave Monday afternoon in a release that alluded to insubordination, misrepresentation of facts and a lack of confidence in Sousas ability to work constructively and collaboratively with others going forward. The administrative leave is pending a full review.
Interim director will be Don Ryder.
Sousa is a tenured faculty member.
As part of his duties, Sousa led the Pride of the Southland Band, whose members last week objected to what they saw as a decreasing role of the band at home and away football games. A communication last week from the band said it had been in a bitter battle with athletics department head Dave Hart.
UT last week termed as disrespectful to the chancellor and the athletic director efforts by Sousa and band members to go public with their criticism.
In a letter dated Monday, Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said Sousa had acted unprofessionally.
