RANDOM VOL THOUGHTS

I think the biggest help for AF will be the other RB's stepping up and helping carry the load. He was the perfect back to run behind a line that didn't open the biggest holes. His vision and natural ability allowed him to improvise, cant wait for next year. Since this is random thoughts here is a question; I think Tennessee offers cheerleading scholarships so what kind of recruiting year did their Coach have? Did we get any 5* girls?

I don't consider you bashing him. I think it's a very fair assessment of the situation.
I do think Arian has a lot to prove still. A lot of work to do still. And a lot of things to
accomplish....still. So, no....no problems at all with what you're saying.

He has to come out strong against Cal. He has to do the same with Georgia, Florida and LSU.
I just happen to think he can....as long as he stays healthy. They key to him staying healthy
will be a good o-line and a healthy and consistent back-up. Also, we've got to make the defense
respect our passing game. Erik has to hit the long and short passes and he's going to have to
do it either rolling out of the pocket or standing in it. He cannot afford to get ruffled and I think he
is learning that confidence again. I believe in the coaches but more importantly, I believe in the
guys.

I didn't think you were bashing him. I just think it is more impressive than perhaps you are giving him credit. As an old Linebacker I can tell you. You don't need much film on a teams running game that has a horrible passing game. You stick 8 in the box and hold your lanes. The thing about good backs jake is that they usually have great vision and the ability to hit the opening. So film on him is not as big as you may think. Yes it was only 5 games. But hey, that is 5 games that we saw. You could easily say that he may have had an even better year if he started off the season because teams early were watching our passing game.
again, i don't disagree.....and i never said he wasn't impressive, i was very impressed, and in fact after the USC game, i was wondering to myself, where has this guy been all season?

but it still stands to reason that they guy that started those last 5 games won't more than likely put up those same kind of results in 06 (people talking him up for heismen this, 1600 yards that...), for all the reason i've already stated. And to expect that is setting yourself up to be disappointed, because as of right now, he's the only thing our offense has going for it. He's the only thing you can look back on in 05 with any kind of optimism.

And the the simple fact still remains, he didn't put up those numbers as a starter against LSU, UF, UGA, Bama etc....it was agains Vandy, KY, MEmphis etc...and again, i'm not saying he won't do well against them, just that it will be interesting to see if he will...playing a 12 game schedule as the feature back against all of that competition is a far cry from doing it in 5 games where 3 or 4 of those teams were not real good on D.

Until we prove we can function at other aspects of the offense, the running game will most likely suffer, no matter how good AF is, and i do think he's good...

I just think the expectations for AF should be tempered with the overall performance of the offense, and right now, we just don't know how that's all going to play out. So it's really difficult for me to say that he's GOING to do this or that. Sure he's capable, no doubts or arguements with that, and all the points you've raised about his vision, ability to hit the hole etc...are all valid, and are all reasons why he would flourish, if the rest of our offense comes together with him.

it just can't be a one man show, that's all.

i think he can too...so long as the rest of the offense doens't leave him haning... :hi:

This is completely random and there wasn't really a thread to post it on. Does anyone else think that Arian Foster runs the ball very similar to Larry Johnson? It's not just that they have the same #27... I really think Arian's game is a lot like Johnson's. Deceptively quick... patient... power... anybody agree?

This thread may drop of the face of the earth... but it might be a good thread for other completely random thoughts that don't really belong on any other thread... and they don't really need a thread of their own either.

I said the same thing last year. Its almost identical.

UT will keep the linebackers and strong safety from creeping up next year simply by utilizing the tight end a little more. I am already willing to predict that the new wrinkles will go a long way towards keeping so many defenders out of the box. That means that the O-line can concentrate a little more on their assignments. The future is very bright for this offense.

I think your right Lex. I would also like to see AF get a few more receptions as called plays not just a relief valve when the QB is about to get sacked.

Yep, he was valuable in the passing game last year too. I think he had a couple of games where he was over 300 total yards, that was most of our offense in those games.

I would really like to see him release off of a block and be the target for more passes. I think the kid would pick up huge yardage.

Especially if we have been using the TE's properly. When those linebackers start worrying about the tight ends, they could quickly forget about the running back catching a pass.

We used to be the best screen team in the nation, and that was when coach cut was here!!!!!!!! How can you compare him to Larry Johnson? He's a football player not a b-ball player. I would compare him to Travis Henry; I love both of them. I always compared Henry to a billy goat; almost impossible to knock off of his feet. He was almost impossible to stop for at least three or four yards. And he's the all time leader in rushing in ut history even though he came here the same year as Jamal Lewis. I see AF as that kind of back. I remember after Randy Moore of IT.com and Rocky Top News saw him scrimmage for the first time as a true Freshman he predicted he would be the next great back at ut; I was sceptical, but not now. I know mom is proud, you have a lot to be proud of!

There is an article in the Chattanooga Paper today about a girl from Ooltewah High and her boyfriend from McCallie that have made the team for next year. How's that for timing, I haven't read the article yet to see of Scout or one of the others have rated them.

My favorite football play is the play action tight end bootleg. With Arian at the tailback, the LB'S gotta respect the run...Ainge rolls out after the fake handoff and a TE is open 10-15 yards downfield. If our rifleman can find his touch the chains guys should be pretty busy.
