I was in a very interesting conversation yesterday. We were ranking the D1 Women's Basketball Head Coaches only in the state of TN. I was entertained and surprised where CHW was placed in the discussion. No one ranked her higher than 4th. What say you guys?

Well, it is about time somebody finally started a thread to discuss and criticize Holly's coaching.

I think she is up there if your only counting Tennessee. I would say second behind the UT Martin coach.

I'd love to know what other coach in the state has won an SEC Title.

I'll give you that Jim Foster has been to 4 Elite 8s, where Holly has only been to 3. Of course, it took him 11 seasons as an NCAA coach to reach his first, even though 4 of those seasons there were only 32 teams in the field, his 1st Elite 8 came in a 48-team tourney. He hasn't been to one since 2002.

And there are boards throughout the nation that rank the State of Tennessee and many believe our state is slightly above Mississippi. and I write this not to be critical but that the LVs have to overcome a negative perception of Tennessee when they are recruiting some young women.

Foster won 3 SEC titles. You also conveniently leave out that he's actually taken a team to the Final Four.

He may not be the coach he used to be, but he still managed to split his last two games against Holly with far less talent...

Being a "has been" still beats being a "never will be."

Yes true..... he had 3 SEC titles and a FF..... but so what I say, the bar in WCBB not too high....

Just not overall blown away by his coaching acumen....

I like the current Oregon St coach.... 6 years there has built from the ground up..... that is where I would put my bottom dollar....

He won 3 SEC tournaments, but never a regular season title. As I've noted when talking about Holly's record, the SEC recognizes the regular season winner as the SEC Champion.

Foster's Vanderbilt team did go to the Final Four in 1993 in a 48-team tournament.

excellent coaches around the country that we are not aware of because they are leading lower-profile programs that don't get a lot of media attention. You can judge coaches by looking for those who take losing or below average programs and turn them into winners within, say, five years. If someone took the time to really analyze all the D1 coaches in America, I'm quite sure ours wouldn't be very high. There are some coaches who can coach but not recruit; others who can recruit but are mediocre coaches (hello, Dawn!), some who are pretty good at both. The UT's men's program had a coach years ago, Devoe, who was a good coach but couldn't recruit well enough, and had another coach, Green, who could recruit but couldn't coach, in my opinion. You need someone who can do both, of course.

Personally I like coaches who wear color-coordinated outfits and give great Knute Rockne type speeches at press conferences. I think that's the most important thing.

So should Pat's first three National Championships have asterisks by them?

When talking about Holly's record, you also need to recognize the SEC was a lot better when Foster coached than it is now. You remember the 90's, when you could always count on the SEC getting at least one (and often two) teams in the Final Four? How's that been going lately?

Do people think Vandy's coach is not worthy of being on the list? I know they are rivals, but.... she would seem to belong somewhere.

I disagree completely with that statement. By every measure possible, the SEC has never been better than it has been the last three years.
