Ranking the head coaching jobs that are or could become open this offseason - NCF - ESPN

1. Oregon
2. Auburn
3. Tennessee
Current status: Open
After two decades with the same coach, the Vols are seeking their fourth in six seasons. So, stability is necessary for Dave Hart's first hire as AD. Hart has said he seeks a candidate with previous head-coaching experience -- and someone who knows the SEC would even be a bonus.

Tennessee is a tricky job because, really, it's a recruiting nightmare. It always was, but going beyond the state's borders requires a tete-a-tete against division rivals Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. And there are fewer selling points, at least for now, than Tennessee used to have. An intelligent salesman will be required for the job, regardless of where he was previously employed.

On the plus side, the facilities are top-notch -- and getting better, with a new football weight room and coaches' offices -- but that alone doesn't equal success. As a friend of mine close to the program said, development is just as important for the next coach as recruiting is. Even if it isn't a top-10 sort of class, the incoming staff needs to be adept at mining and extracting talent. Perhaps an overachieving coach produces overachieving players.
4. Arkansas
5. NC State
6. Cal
7. South Florida
8. Purdue
9. Boston College
10. Kentucky

Potential openings in 2013:
- Texas
- USC
- South Carolina
- Virginia Tech
- Iowa

He ranks Oregon #1 just because of Nike.

Speculation he'll go pro. He almost went to Tampa Bay last year.

I understand the challenge part of wanting to give the NFL a shot, but he has it made there and with a sugar daddy like Phil Knight they can pretty much get whatever they want.

Who says is Oregon is going to open anyway? I don't think Kelly is going anywhere. And if he was, It's not as good as Tennessee. SEC is big time money for these coaches, much more so then PAC 12....especially endorsement money. Auburn and UT are a toss up IMHO, The best conference in College athletics is the SEC. Everybody else is a far, far away #2.

What makes Oregon a better job than any SEC school? I would hate to live out there in that rain forest.

Easier to win, top facilities, Phil knight aka Nike, and a program currently in the top 10 every year. Why would it not be a better job at the moment.

The only reason not to rate them top is the upcoming smack down the NCAA is about to lay down on them for the Willy Lyles stuff.

College athletics??? Better pump those breaks. Outside of Football, Baseball, Track, and Golf the SEC is middle of the road in most sports. If it wasn't for the one and done dynasty at Kentucky and the addition of Mizzou the SEC would be seriously behind the Big East, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 12 in the only other relevant college sport, Basketball. Let's not over-validate our conference. The SEC runs college football year in year and that is the only draw we need to hire a football coach.

wonder if he's on Haslam's radar for the Browns

I don't think the Browns are really suited for that style. Weeden played the spread in college, but the Browns have a big OL and rely on Richardson. Richardson is their best player and wouldn't fit into Kelly's system, IMO

And puts Auburn over Tennessee because of recruiting.

The state of Alabama might have more talent than Tennessee but competing against in-state rival Alabama puts Auburn at a big disadvantage, so I think that makes Tennessee more attractive than Auburn...that & other reasons make Tennessee more attractive

Yeah, I disagree with the notion that Auburn has much of a recruiting advantage over Tennessee. They have more in state talent, but they are clearly the second program in that state. Also, Auburn is a lovely campus, but its basically in the middle of nowhere. Harder to convince kids to come to that kind of place. Additionally, everyone gets caught up on our in state talent issues, but they always overlook the vast amount of talent within a 5 hour drive to Knoxville.

The thing is, just because Dooley was a lousy recruiter, people tend to lose sight of the fact that historically, we've brought in great recruiting classes. I haven't looked at rankings of these vs. Auburn's over the last thirty years, but, on average, I doubt that Auburn would have outranked by very much, if any, overall.

Philly would be a good fit for CCK. Vick for 1-2 years and draft a QB. They also have Jackson, McCoy, and others that can fly.

With Rivera done, Kelly having Newton isn't a bad combo.

Here's one thing the talking heads failed to mention, Tennessee and oregon have very little in state talent .
The majority of oregon's roster is comprised of recruits from the nearby populous and talent rich state of california.
No need to search far and wide like UT has too. When it comes to comparing facilities.....C'MON man !
