Ranking potential coaching openings

The state of Alabama might have more talent than Tennessee but competing against in-state rival Alabama puts Auburn at a big disadvantage, so I think that makes Tennessee more attractive than Auburn...that & other reasons make Tennessee more attractive

Can someone please explain why Tennessee's in-state talent is so poor? Population-wise it compares with Louisiana and, I think, exceeds Alabama.

College athletics??? Better pump those breaks. Outside of Football, Baseball, Track, and Golf the SEC is middle of the road in most sports. If it wasn't for the one and done dynasty at Kentucky and the addition of Mizzou the SEC would be seriously behind the Big East, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 12 in the only other relevant college sport, Basketball. Let's not over-validate our conference. The SEC runs college football year in year and that is the only draw we need to hire a football coach.

Really?? I guess you forgot about Florida in Men's BB, The Lady Vols aint to shabby either. And other than Football, Baseball, Track and Golf?? Damn, seriously??

There are schools...UCLA, Standford, Arizona who have great programs all around....But not confrences.

Yes Swimming, wrestling, Woman's softball, diving, etc...are sports, are they really generating millions for their schools or confrences?? C'mon man, you mentioned all the money sports.

Yes when you compare the big dollar sports vs rythmn sycronized basket weaving its really not apples to apples.

I'd flip UT and Auburn. Having to coach in the same state as Saban would be brutal.

Oregon def. #1. Easy conference and only a couple teams could really rival you every season.

Demographics primarily. Tennessee has a lower black population than most other SEC states. That is complicated by the poor quality of youth and HSFB played in and around Memphis... which wouldn't necessarily be "home turf" for UT anyway.

Tn has a somewhat dispersed population also. Larger communities can support better youth and HSFB programs like those around ATL.

You are right that UT should have more athletes capable of being top notch recruits. Development is a problem without an easy fix.

I can see Oregon being @ 1.

I'd put UT ahead of Auburn. They'll always be #2 in their state

Having to operate in Bama's shadow is probably the biggest factor in putting UT ahead of Auburn, but the jobs are definitely on par with each other.

What makes Oregon a better job than any SEC school? I would hate to live out there in that rain forest.

And this is why you're reading the article instead of publishing it. Have you ever been to Oregon? Just because you're a "Vol for Life" doesn't mean Tennessee is the greatest state in the US and Knoxville is the only place recruits wanna play or coaches want to coach. Everyone talks about how delusional Arky fans are but I think VN is a very close second.

Thanks. That question has been bugging me for awhile

Your right. Tennessee HS Football is behind times in comparison to other states. Besides the big schools, the level of coaching and caliper of players really falls off. I live in Tampa and one of my friends who played for Univ Michigan coached DBs at same high school that Andy Murray played at (Plant HS). He shared some insight. In Florida football is all year round sport. 7 on 7 summer. The entire year is geared toward development that mirrors big time college football. Watching game film, etc... In states like Tennessee the really good athletes end up playing multiple sports, Football, Basketball, Baseball. Florida high schools are typically much larger which allows for more athletes and allows the athletes to specialize in one sport.

Heck I went to HS in Blountville, TN before TN started dividing into A, AA, etc... Some of our best players had to play both ways in our little county HS, when the larger schools were dressing out 80+ players.

Easier to win, top facilities, Phil knight aka Nike, and a program currently in the top 10 every year. Why would it not be a better job at the moment.

The only reason not to rate them top is the upcoming smack down the NCAA is about to lay down on them for the Willy Lyles stuff.

I agree with all the above, but I had no idea until today that Nike was there. I learn something valuable from here everyday. Is there somewhere that has our biggest boosters listed. I googled it with not much luck.

UT > Auburn

More money, better facilities, better school, better place to live, more fans, don't have to compete with saban in the same state, etc.

I have been to Oregon. My company just sold off a division that had an office in Portland. I have been many places in this great country and a few others. I never said Tennessee was the greatest state nor Knoxville best place to play. I asked what made Oregon a better destination than ANY OTHER SEC school. Thanks for your input, but I had that already answered with much more respect.

That stadium is very highly thought of even though it holds only 54,000 and is probably louder than Neyland.

If you think Oregon can match us in terms of stadium, facilities, fan base, tradition or level of SEC competition, then you need to put the bong down. They may be louder than Neyland at this point in time, but over time we kill them at being a consistent winning program in the best conference in football.
Oregon is 600-474-47 all time...UT is 798-355-52

Well, if you could get some of the old farts that come to the games to quit acting like they are attending church instead of a football game, that might change. Seriously, a buddy of mine dragged me to every game one season, and it took me and 5 other blue collar types to get our section fired up. And that was 1998.

just got to thinking that if UT's new coaches started holding more coaching clinics for youth league, middle and high school coaches, rather than wasting time "creating excitement for the program" by speaking at the Hooterville Lion's club, it might (long term) help our own schools develop more division 1A talent.

I like how you name 4 sports that the SEC is strong in as an argument against the SEC being a strong athletic conference. And also include if KY and Mizzou weren't in the conference, then SEC would not be good in basketball, which is like saying if Puke and UNC weren't in ACC they wouldn't have a strong basketball conference. I would also throw in that SEC is pretty strong in tennis as well.

What an awful and ridiculous post.
