The Minneapolis Star-Tribune editorial board is growing tired of the constant controversies surrounding freshman lawmaker Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.).

"Every month seems to bring a fresh problem" with Omar, the board wrote, after she agreed to repay $3,500 and $500 fines following an investigation into misuse of campaign funds. The Campaign Finance Board found Omar had filed a joint tax return with a man when she was legally married to another at the time.

"Omar’s political rise has been marred by a series of unforced errors, including intemperate remarks and tweets earlier this year that were widely perceived as anti-Semitic," the board wrote. "Every month seems to bring a fresh problem."

The board said Omar's tax discrepancy was potentially serious enough to merit further investigation:

It’s against the law in Minnesota to file jointly unless one filer is legally married to the other. Last year Omar told the Star Tribune that she had married her partner "in her faith," and had earlier divorced her first husband "in her faith." That’s fine for religious purposes. But for tax purposes, only civil marriages qualify. It’s not known whether she benefited materially by filing jointly. That is something that voters, who are obliged to follow tax laws no matter how painful, are entitled to know.

It’s not too much to expect that a lawmaker would check with a tax attorney on a rather complicated marital status before filing.

If this pattern continues, further investigation may be necessary. Omar could have avoided nearly every infraction by taking simple measures in advance to determine whether her actions would pass legal muster. In its findings, the board noted that Minnesota "House Research staff did explain that generally when they discuss whether a member can accept something of value, for example, travel and lodging reimbursement … they discuss whether that would violate the gift prohibition," but do not advise. "Rather, they commonly refer members to the Board. The Omar committee did not contact Board staff … on the appropriateness of using committee funds for the travel reviewed in this investigation."​
It's not Omar's first financial transgression, either. She had to return $2,500 in speaking fees while a member of the Minnesota State House for accepting money from groups with business before the legislature.

The editorial board said Omar owed her constituents better, given her status as one of the Democratic Congress's most visible new members. She is the first Somali-American elected to Congress, but she has made a series of anti-Semitic and other controversial remarks while in office.

The native born leeches in this country have done a fantastic job of creating non-Americans as it is. No way a foreign born national could do a better job than them.

Point being, you have far bigger fish to fry that were actually born in America than you do foreign born nationals.

Omar, still a teenager, settles in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis after fleeing Somalia's civil war with her family and spending four years in a refugee camp in Kenya.

2002: Omar, now 19, marries Ahmed Hirsi, 22, in their “faith tradition” in Minnesota, but they don't legally marry.

2008: Omar and Hirsi, now the parents of two children, reach an “impasse in our life together” and divorce in their faith tradition.

Report: More Documents Raise Questions About Ilhan Omar’s Marriage

New documents uncovered by the Washington Examiner raise further questions about the marriage of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to her first legal husband, following a campaign finance investigation and closer mainstream media scrutiny.

A Minnesota state ethics board investigation found earlier this month that Omar had improperly used campaign funds to pay for out-of-state travel unrelated to her state legislative duties, and to pay for legal expenses related to her taxes.

The report also found that Omar had filed taxes jointly in 2014 and 2015 with a man named Ahmed Hirsi, who was not her husband at the time. She was married at the time to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi — though Hirsi fathered her children. Omar claims to have married Hirsi in an Islamic ceremony in 2002, then divorced him before marrying Elmi legally. She then divorced Elmi before marrying Hirsi legally. However, she had filed tax returns with Hirsi before doing so.

On Sunday, the Washington Examiner reported it had found documents to suggest that Omar and Hirsi may not have separated during her marriage to Elmi, adding fuel to speculation the marriage may have been for immigration purposes.

Ilhan Omar Admits Fabricating Story About an ‘Injustice’ to High School Students

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) admitted to fabricating a story on a purported “injustice” to a group of students five years ago during her tenure as a Minneapolis city councilman, it was revealed Monday.

The Washington Post piece detailing Omar’s “complicated” relationship with the U.S. featured a brief mention of a story Omar told a group of 400 high school students at Richfield High School in Minneapolis five years ago. She told the students she witnessed a “sweet, old … African American lady” in a courtroom who spent a weekend in jail for stealing $2 loaf of bread to feed her hungry granddaughter.

She told them the woman was fined $80 – a fine she was incapable of paying. Omar told the students she “couldn’t control” her emotions because she “couldn’t understand how a roomful of educated adults could do something so unjust.” She claimed she shouted, “Bullsh*t!” in the courtroom.

However, even the Washington Post seemed to think Omar’s tale sounded oddly familiar:

Omar’s story echoed the plot of “Les Miserables.” If true, it is also probably embellished. City officials said that police aren’t allowed to arrest people for shoplifting unless there’s a likelihood of violence or further crime. Typically, shoplifters are sentenced to attend a three-hour class.​
When questioned, Omar admitted she likely omitted – or as the Post described it, “flubbed” – key details:

In an interview, Omar said she may have flubbed some facts. “She might have had a prior [arrest],” Omar said. “I’m not sure. . . . The details might not have all matched, but that’s what I remember.”​
As the Post noted, non-violent shoplifters with clean records are not immediately placed in jail. Rather, they are required to take a three-hour course, signaling another red flag in Omar’s story, seemingly aimed to taint the student body’s view of the justice system.

The Post also noted another instance of Omar flubbing basic facts, recalling her recent remarks to group of veterans. She reportedly told them that nearly half – 45 percent – of military families “rely on food stamps.”
