Real grass vs field turf

Tried artificial turf and returned to natural grass. Leave it the hell alone!

Tried the IBM PC in 1979. Laggy as crap and those noisy almost worthless floppy's can't hold hardly any info.

... :p

The stuff has changed dramatically since the carpet on concrete days.

That list of schools are mostly northern schools. We are in the south with longer growing seasons

I really wish Philly and the Redskins would end the charade of trying to keep real grass all season long and just go ahead and put in the artificial stuff.

I know the Skins tried Latitude 36 Bermuda last season but they still had to re-sod late in the year. Not sure if that was part of the plan or not.

The Skins allowed High Schools to play football and soccer on the field. Bermuda is tough to grow late in the season, but they apparently have a farm on the eastern shore growing grass specifically for the field

The same in Philly. Temple plays there as well. That's 16-17 football games on a field. That's too many.

The Titans field used to get pretty rough too. Later in the season it just looks like painted dirt.

Grass. Grass. Grass. Players are familiar with the product already.
That is not as true as it used to be. Many high schools are starting to put in field turf. So the kids are used to playing on turf more than you would think for now days.

Grass, got to be. I played (soccer) on some f'ing nice turf a few years ago, and even with turf cleats it still doesn't handle the same. Cuts are more difficult to make and getting a good plant is hard off a cut, (which is why you see more injuries and 'turf' tackles) and it gets way worse with rain or dew. You can run faster on turf but the balance is that you can't make moves as easily. I always preferred grass, even after playing on several different types of turf. And i despise the little black balls/filler material in turf fields, you can never get rid of it, its worse than sand.

I'd like to see the Power T at midfield a little larger or even go back to the UT like in the 90's

Here in the last five yrs a lot of colleges have went to field turf instead of real grass. I personally like the real grass fields and I was wondering what everybody else thought and does anyone think that TN might switch to the field turf in the near future?

No.

Dave Hart from an interview with TOS in the spring:

VQ: Would you consider Field Turf as an option at any point?

DH: Not in the foreseeable future [would he consider field turf]. I think part of our tradition is our field. And when that field is in great condition, it's a source of pride for everybody.

I've seen two turf fields up close, Maryville & Grace Christian. Granted, the colored areas are more consistent than you usually get with a grass field, and over time might be less expensive to maintain.

However, I always have and always will prefer natural grass. God got it right.

Field Turf is great for a high school where the field is "multi-purpose". There are kids on them almost every day, multiple times a day. When it comes to a dedicated football field that only has a handful of games a season, there is no excuse not to have an immaculate real grass field. It may not be easy in November, but it needs to be close to perfect. I mean come on...we offer a field turf degree at UT.
