Being born and raised in the state of Tennessee. I have always been a VOL fan. Living in a household with my father and two brothers that played football afforded me the opportunity to know what football was all about and a deep respect for the sport and those who play it.
The Tennessee Volunteers have one of the largest fan bases of any universities around (and I am not knocking this great fact), but my question is... How many of those fans actually know anything about the University of Tennessee as a school or how many of the fans for Vol sports actually have attended the University? I myself can say I attended the University for awhile and although didn't leave the University with a degree, was there long enough to know it is a great institution.

Just a thought and wanted to get your opinion on this!!

Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Well let me put it this way for you. I didn't attend the University of Tennessee, but only because they aren't strong in my area of study.

BUT I have been going to games since I was a very little kid and visited often on weekends when my friends were there. I have also had family that attended this great institution....one being my mother and another being VN's very own surrealvol.

So instead of typing out my life story with the Vols and how I've supported them over the years, let me just say that I was born into it. Those who inherit it at birth should be right up there with people that attended. Don't you think? :biggrin2:

My grandparents are from Knoxville. My mom and dad met at Fulton High School. I lived in Knoxville until I was 3, then grew up in Nashville. My dad graduated from UT, my aunts and uncles, brothers graduated from UT. Yes, even I graduated from UT. (Even though it took 7 years) But I remember going to alot of games as a kid, when Alan Cockrell (sp) was our QB. I remember seeing Willie Gault, Reggie White, Jon-EE Jones, the all-orange "cotton" cloth uniforms, beating Notre Dame bad, getting beat by Vanderbilt and Whitt Taylor, being 9 years old when I witnessed the first victory over Alabama. But honestly, I didn't get a since of being an elite team until 1985. I was 12 years old, and I started paying alot more attention to detail then. Before, when I was younger, I didn't get angry or sad when we lost. Heck, I didn't in 1985 either, but that Auburn game, that defense, and that win over Miami in the Sugar Bowl (we went out and played in the snow after the game) was like a big Christmas present. It wasn't until about then that I knew we had good teams before I was born. Then it took 4 more years to get good again. So, after watching the 1985 team have success, I started getting angry in 1986, 1987, and especially, 1988. But, since 1989, I think Tennessee has picked up it's swagger since the early 70's (before I was born)
I was a senior in H.S. when we beat Florida 45-3 in 1990. And the "Down pour" game in the rain against Florida in 1992 was one of my favorites. 1995 Alabama game is one of my favorites, too. It was just awesome being a student in the first week of the fall semester, walking around the U.C. to check out the new freshmen ladies, and hearing "It's Football Time in Tennessee" playing over the loudspeaker in an empty Neyland Stadium."

I have never lived in TN. I have never attended UT, although there is a small chance that I'll go to grad school there next year. And, I was not born into it. But, I have slowly become a bigger and bigger fan over the last 20 years, have been to several games, and probably wear orange more often than any other Kentuckian. I hope that's enough for admission into the club. :p

You don't have to be from Tennessee or have gone to school there to be a fan. I was lucky to go to school there, but I know MANY fans who grew up Vols fans that went to school somewhere else. There are many people who go to school at UT that could care less about football, just like anywhere. Believe me Kentucky Vol, there's no such thing as "You're not a real UT fan unless you went to school there." If that were the case, building Neyland would have been as big a waste as building Thompson-Bowling. We welcome fans anywhere on Earth, Mars, wherever. A Tennessee fan is a Tennessee fan. Now, if you were Nick Lachey, then I would push your wagon on out of here. Good luck with grad school!!

I'm in the same boat. I was about a month away from attending UT before I got an offer to play golf at an NAIA school. Luckily, they didn't have a football team, so my allegiance never waivered.

I was raised in Tennessee and went to a small college in Georgia without a football team so I never had to choose between trooting for my school and the team I grew up with. :pepper:

I was 9 yrs old when I went to my first Game against Ga Tech in 1969. I still remember it because they used to throw these small orange footballs into the stands and I got real lucky and caught one.I was a fan from that point on.

I became a die hard fan when I attended UT (class of 84). Since then its been one emotional ride following the VOLS but I have enjoyed every single minute of it, although there are a few moments I wish I could erase from my memory.

GO VOLS!

BEAT BAMA!

Please don't misunderstand the post by thinking I meant "if you didn't attend UT you aren't a real Vol fan". I think it is great the VOLS have such and extensive fan base... I just wanted to know how many people actually attended or have knowledge of the college these athletes play for. It was just a thought provoking question.... nothing more.
I have enjoyed the replies so far...

GO VOLS!!!! :good:

UT is a great school if you're getting an M.B.A., a master's in Engineering, Law, Medicine (Memphis) or Forensic Anthropology.

UT's best program by far is its logistics program. It was recently ranked in the top 10 in the country for this year and it is traditionally a top 10-15 program.

You're right, Transportation and Logistics is a great program. But not "by far" the best. The M.B.A. program was ranked #5 in public schools by the Wall Street Journal (2005)

And Nuclear Engineering was ranked #10 by U.S. News and World Report, the same that ranked the logistics/supply chain # 10.

I was born in Knoxville, and have lived here all my life. The majority of my family has always been Vol fans with the exception of my brother. Somehow he went to the darkside (Bammer). Needless to say it leads to some fiery holiday football discussions. I will graduate this May from the great University with my degree in Chemical Engineering. There is no other university like UT. I am proud to be from Knoxville and UT, and I support all UT sports.

Good luck Chem!! My brother has a Civil Engineering degree and master's from UTK. He's doing well now. Unfortunately, I picked a B.A. in English, but went back for a B.S. in Finance. It still didn't help!! :fool:

Whether attending UT or not doesn't make you a fan(good or bad), it has nothing to do with being a fan!

My wife graduated from UTK with BS in Finance, and she hates it. I am just blessed to be able to do something that I enjoy.

I'm a longtime Vol FOOTBALL fan who did not attend UT. I'm from North Carolina, am from a poor family so out of state tuition was out of the question. Not smart enough to get a scholarship, so went to UNC Asheville, a commuter school. No football team.

Why the Vols? Because they kicked the holy ____out of UNC in football for about 15 years straight from the early 50's to the middle 60's when I was a Tarheel fan. I guess it was my masochitic tendencies turning into true love. Call it my second marriage and this one's gonna last.

PS Still follow the 'Heels in roundball. They play pretty good
bb over there. Hate Dook and NC State in everything.

I intentionally left them out. They suck too much to even get recognition.

I have been a Vol fan nearly 40 years in good times and bad, was fortunate that my first year at UT was the year we broke the Bama curse, don't think anyone in Neyland sat down the entire game.

I was born less than 3 miles from the stadium. I grew up eating orange cheerios every football saturday of my young life. I lived in K-town for 21 years and then traveled all over the great USA an still never left the vols behind. So many Vol fans would stop me and ask how I got there when I had my orange on or flew my colors. I have come back home after a 5 year leave and NOTHING will deter my love for this team and the next and the next. I graduated form UT and loved every minute of it. And one thing I live to see is The Big Orange rolling up on Bama. Go Vols, beat the @#$! out of Bama.
