Really bad day for SEC Basketball

I think this will be a make or break season for Martin at Missouri and Kansas flattening the Tigers 102-65 will have their fans calling for Martin's dismissal at Missouri.

Cuonzo needs to go back to coaching mid majors. And a middle tier mid major where they are happy for an occasional deep run in their own conference tourney.

He's not a power 5 coach. He's essentially stole millions of dollars from the schools he's coached at.

Yet is still living rent free in your head almost 10 years later. No, he didn't win a helluva lot of games, but he still has 1 of the staggering 6 Sweet 16s in the 2000s. We get it, you expected him to be the second coming of Jesus, but holy hell.

Cuonzo made a mistake following Bruce. His focus on defense aligned well with TN’s tradition, but his timing was poor. Bruce made basketball exciting and high energy. Cuonzo is more disciplined and conservative in his approach. His style might have worked well after Jerry Green or Donnie Tyndall… maybe even after Kevin O’Neill since although he was a sideline clown like Bruce, he didn’t win basketball games at TN. It didn’t help matters here that Bruce decided to maintain a high profile in Knoxville after he got himself fired. CCM didn’t handle the criticism well either and his reputation as a good coach has fallen as he’s bounced around in various jobs. He couldn’t slow the trend. He played his victim card but couldn’t back it up as a great coach.

Had he not followed Bruce and had he embraced the TN fans rather than promoted an us versus them attitude that was divisive between his players and the TN fans, his could have been a different story. His best option now would be to go back to a mid-major and start over. He’ll never be able to catch up at the P-6 level now - he has too much baggage.

We cannot afford a slip-up against Memphis. And, we really need to split Arizona-Alabama.

The new NET rankings are bit concerning for our opportunities for quality wins.

Martin's biggest problem was all 3 seasons his teams didn't start getting it together until their backs were against the wall. If they had played that way all season, heck he may still be coaching here.

And I'm not buying anything about not getting support. I remember TBA rocking in his first year beating Vandy to win the East (back when we still had divisions). And his next season the final home game against Missouri, same thing.

I agree with all this. Had some talented players and teams that didn’t produce results in line with their abilities until that final run his last year. Agree with the rest of the statements you made as well. For me personally, his offense was boring and felt outdated. Just my personal preferences.

Agree. If your style of play isn't exciting, at least endear yourself to the fans. He didn't do either.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's his last year in Mizzou.

His contract at Mizzou was one that highly protected Martin. I don’t think they could fire him his first 3 seasons no matter the results. I wanted to believe when he was introduced at Tennessee that he would be a great fit. It turned out to be just the opposite, and felt like he was disparaging the program unnecessarily. As time continued and he jumped from job to job, we began to get a pretty clear picture of his MO.

He under achieved (like he has at Cal and now Mizzou), distanced himself from the fanbase and knew he wasn't liked. So he ran. Then he played the race card as the reason he left and wasn't liked.

A little exaggerated isn't it? I remember correctly, that Clay Travis was pushing for him to get fired hard and he barely survived and kept his job thanks to a lucky entry into the NCAA and making the most of it to run into Sweet 16 (almost Elite 8).

I'm not certain on the Clay Travis stuff....but I don't think that would matter.

CM knew he wasn't liked (which was mostly all due to himself and his Us against the fans mentality). He wasn't being fired, but his seat was warm, despite the crazy sweet 16 run. He packed up, used the company jet to go interview and lied saying he was on a recruiting trip, and then bolted.

to be a good fit at UT all a coach needs is the Al Davis metric - just win baby!

Only thing UT didn’t like about CM was the obvious inability to get production / results from a very talented roster.
