Recent history suggests next year is key

We absolutely have to see major, across-the-board team improvements in Year Two despite having a less experienced team. That is the norm for elite level coaches regardless of situation.

There were no excuses for Vanderbilt; there are no excuses not to make the above happen.

By the way, how many championships does Spurrier have at USC? I'll wait... Screw giving CBJ a bunch of time. Show me that you are above and beyond an average coach. There should be at least glimpses of greatness by next year or he needs to recruit and GTFO. Greatness doesn't hide itself for long. Mediocrity can be covered by excuses forever.

How many championships did Saban have at Michigan State? I'll wait. How many Super Bowls did he have at Miami? I'll wait. How many championships did Miles have at Oaklahoma St? I'll wait. How many championships did Bear Bryant have at UK and TAMU? I'll wait.

You obviously have no clue about rebuilding a team.

Technically UK claims one for 1950 while Bear was there. I know, I know, "but that's ours!!!" Anyway, I understand that Saban and Miles only had moderate success at Michigan St. and "Oaklahoma" St. respectively. The point is this, if you want moderate success, that's great. Give CBJ twenty years to muddle around in Knoxville. When great coaches match up well with a school and become great, they do it quickly or they leave. So you've proven my point, they couldn't win big at those schools so they left. Again, if you're looking for national championships, you should be looking for above and beyond normal expectations.

I'm in the middle of the road here. I agree with the sentiment of the OP, but in reality our situation is much more like what Spurrier was dealing with at SC. That being said, there is no reason for UT fans to ever expect 5-7. If Butch is going to keep recruiting momentum, I think a bowl is essential next year.

I agree. If the win total is 5 again next year. I think he's going to have trouble getting kids to continue to buy into what he's selling. It has to be at least a little better you would hope. We are about were SC was though i agree on that point as well.

At the very least, we have to see consistent improvement without regression. There is no such thing as year zero.

Consider the coaches who have won SEC Championships since 2000 and their first year and second year regular season records:

Saban (Bamer) 6-6 12-0
Miles 10-1 10-2
Chizik 7-5 12-0 Won SEC Won BCS
Meyer 8-3 11-1 Won SEC Won BCS
Richt 8-3 11-1 Won SEC
Tuberville 5-6 9-2 Sec Championship game
Saban (LSU) 7-4 8-3 Won SEC
Spurrier 9-2 10-1 Won SEC

You have to go back to Mike Dubose to find someone who did not get to double digit wins, or win the conference or, in the case of Tuberville - win a division.

Dubose went 4-7 his first year and reversed that in 1998 to go 7-4 before going 9-2 and winning the SEC in 1999. So his second year was still a solid improvement, if not as spectacular a season as the more recent championship coaches.

Joker phillips 6-7 5-7
Will Muschamp 11-2 - 4-8
Hugh Freesze 7-6 - 7-5

6 wins max folks. We have a long way to go.

I could live with 6 wins next year, if coupled with outstanding improvement and progression (esp with a younger team) throughout the year, and a lack of what has been some really questionable MAJOR HC in-game decisions throughout this campaign.

E'erbody gots to get better in 2014. E'erbody!

So is that the type or caliber of coach tn fans should expect. I am sorry, but u 6/6 wanting vol fans are probably the same ones that backed dd. get your expectations up people. May as we'll tell your kids to go for welfare as to keep them from having higher expectations. Cowards if u ask me.

Great coaches show improvement. #fact.

I have a hard time seeing more than 6 wins on our schedule next year.

If if if we see a QB make significant strides in the off-season and through the year, I can see 8 wins max. I think our WRs will be solid with North/Croom/Howard/Pearson/Johnson all back. This is all on quality QB play.

Most people say that Ferguson is a stud and is the answer at QB so that should be the least of our worries right? If he is as good as advertised I don't see much problem getting to 7 wins.

I have heard the same thing from a lot of former players who come to our tailgate regularly. I hate to be a "grass is greener" guy just looking to the next QB all of the time, but even Butch had him above Dobbs on the depth chart at one time.
