Recruiting 2014 thru 2017

So, OP, UT doesn't recruit enough 5*, and when they do, they're the wrong ones.

Gotcha.
You clearly missed the point. 05_never_again posted players play like their star rating. I simply pointed out Drew Richmond certainly hasn't played like his 5 star ranking out of high school. What about that was hard to understand, comprehend?

I noticed that as the announcements were made - some services would list a player as a 3* then another service would say 4*.

To me it is more about getting the right players to fill the needs.

What if all the 5* were positions where a team really had no need, it would be crazy for a coach to take those and not address the need.

So the question should be ... does this class when combined with the talent that is coming back fill the needs for the team to be successful?

I don't know who does the evaluations, but it's hard to know who is right. One service says Reid is a 4 star, another a 3. This is true for several guys. Are the evaluators at 247 better than the ones at Rivals? Who knows

There are several in this class that are 3 stars that could easily be a 4 star. The most subjective ranking of all the rankings are the high 3 star vs. 4 star, young players that aren't always evaluated properly it's not a perfect science. That's why it is wise to wait a few year before claiming this class good or average or whatever. We identified some needs. we could have done better or we could have done worse. We just need to go out and win next year and things will take care of themselves. GBO!!!!

On the sonewhat positive side we have nine 4/5 star recruits according to rivals. Nonetheless, this class isn't quite as impressive as years past. I want to believe CBJ was very deliberate in recruiting under the radar players, but not fully convinced. My hope is these are guys he can fill in the depth chart and invest in their development. I think Butch is tired of the highly rated pre-Madonnas and needs some guys who are willing to put the work in and appreciate what it means to play for the Orange and White

I don't deny the downward trend, but it's partially attributable to the depth he acquired by recruiting so successfully his first three years. Thankfully, it's much harder for Butch to sell the opportunity for immediate playing time, which was the major pitch in his first two classes. However, we're losing 20+ seniors and probably a few underclassmen next year, so there will be more opportunity for immediate playing time for the 2018 class.

The other factor is that Butch's honeymoon period with the fans has clearly run out. I'm still rooting for the guy and think his critics are hurting our recruiting, but he needs to have a good season this year (hopefully 9 or more wins) to get another top-10 class.

Finally, it's worth noting that Butch & his staff are excellent talent evaluators (if not developers), so we can trust that some of the less-heralded recruits in this class are still bona fide talents.

Keep believing that.

Alabama 7 straight number 1 classes. They sign players that don't worry about the depth chart.

Lyle brought the national negativity on himself with unexplainable loses to SC and Vandy.

How many unheralded recruits have made a major impact on the Tennessee Vols football program that Lyle has signed?

The excuse last season was injuries, so if you believe Lyle and staff are great talent evaluators and developers of talent than why was injuries used as an excuse in the SC and Vandy loses?

Closet Bama Fan or Pen!$ Envy?

I guarantee you that I am a bigger fan of the University of Tennessee than you are and also have a bigger pen$s.

You, like a lot of posters on this site are Lyle fans not fans of the University of Tennessee.

If you don't see the correlation between Lyle and Dooleys recruiting classes then you are either blind or dumb.

Dooley recruited well his first 1 and half classes and I will give him credit for the half class of his and kiffins, and then the bottom fell off when he was exposed as a terrible coach.

Lyle had 2 really good classes with the help of the legacy players, and now that He has been exposed as a terrible coach and developer of talent his classes are falling off also.

The Dooley era is about to be back.

OK guys. If you don't stop you're going to have to whip them out here. I'm not a judge by the way. I'm sure they'll be some to volunteer.

The biggest difference between this class and some of Jones’ previous ones is the lack of elite talent: There are just five combined 5-star and 4-star prospects in the class, compared with 10 in 2016, 16 in 2015 and 16 in 2014.

SEC class rank: 6
Overall class rank: 14

5-stars: 1
4-stars: 4
3-stars: 23

No one can deny recruiting is trending in the wrong direction.

16, 16, 10, 5. Hmmm. Trend?

If CBJ loses his job it will not be because of recruiting but please keep complaining.
