Recruiting chatter

I'll take Mitchell for 200 Alex...

Seriously though...I was never that high on Washpun to began with and thought we wasted a scholly on him. Maybe he'll get better but he's not the PG I want running my team if I'm Martin. I'd love to have a good PG come in and contribute early but I don't see that happening. If Martin is comfortable with our 2's bringing the ball up to give Golden a rest, so be it. But Mitchell.....kids nasty and would contribute right away!

Maybe you're right, but I'd be willing to bet that athletes in revenue generating sports, like basketball, aren't eligible for non-athletic scholarships. Sure, you have to qualify for the scholarship, but let's be honest, getting a 3.0 in a TN high school for HOPE qualification isn't that difficult. Theoretically, there'd be no way for the NCAA to police a situation like this. Talent rich states with similar state funded scholarship programs would be able to sign kids with no restriction. It'd be like major league baseball with no salary cap. Jarnell Stokes, for example, would've been eligible for the Hope Scholarship. I'm pretty sure this came up during his recruitment when several teams were out of the hunt because they didn't have an available scholarship. They didn't have athletic scholarships available for this year...academic scholarship alternatives weren't an option. He would've been able to attend Memphis if this Hope scholarship scenario were true.

I'm a little lazy, so I don't feel like looking up the rule. Just my two cents, though.

well i decided to not be quite as lazy as you and look it up...from what i found:

student athletes who dont receive athletic scholarships or full scholarships are eligible to use financial aids or other grants. specifically in football if a walk on gets a full ride via other scholarships than an athletic scholarship and is using this scholarship for 2 years, they count towards the total 85 scholarship players on the team. this was all i could find in looking quickly so i dont know if the same 2 year rule applies to basketball or not or maybe its one year, but according to the rules athletes can use other scholarships and financial aids if they are needed. as far as why memphis didnt use this with stokes im not really sure, im sure there is some reason somewhere as to why.

I think the thing with Memphis was Stokes had taken an official visit there. Rules say if you take an official visit you have to go on an athletic scholarship or sit out one year. Memphis could have taken him and put him on financial aid but he wouldn't have been eligible till next season.

That's makes sense good find. With that bit of info though it show skykar could take academic whilst ships if he qualified for them. One thing I don't get though is I'm assuming skykar took an OV to Tennessee right? Why wouldn't he have been forced to sit out a year then?

Do you have a link to the info?

I don't think Skylar took an OV.

Best link I could find. Stokes announcing college choice Thursday - CBSSports.com

very good info thanks for finding, this definitely clears some things up that were in question. what i am gathering from this is that mcbee since already having been here could be a walk-on and receive financial aid and would not be forced to sit out at all. interesting enough, now whether or not that ever comes into play who knows . :)
