Recruiting experts opinions on this class

There isn't any experts. We all read the same stuff on here. So you will hear the same thing over and over again. Just two different opinions. One believes the class will finally shape up into a fine class. The other, its going to Hell in a hand basket and Cat is pushing it.

To my eyes, this class doesnt look that good right now. It could change between now and NSD, but I wouldnt bet on it changing drastically. We have some good players, but we also are loaded with lower ranked guys. Yes they could end up being very good players but who knows. I hope they all end up being great players. But again, who knows.

I am by no means an expert and am very negative when it comes to recruiting. Its just how I am. But, I am wrong, much much more than I am right.

Name a team in the SEC (other than Bama) that didnt have disappointments? There isnt one. Look at Ole Miss and LSU. If Butch lost 4 with LSUs roster people would flip out.

Auburn lost to UGA! Florida lost to Tennessee! UGA lost to Vandy! Kentucky lost to SOuthern Miss.! LSU lost to Wisconsin! Miss. State lost t South Alabama! Missouri lost to M.T.S.U.! Ole MIss lost to Vandy! Tennessee lost to USC! USC lost to Kentucky! A & M lost to Miss. State! Vandy lost to USC & Kentucky.

Only teams that lost the games that they were predicted to lose and won the games they were predicted to win was Alabama & Arkansas.......

On the national level, even T.O.S.U. lost to Phetaphile State University (P.S.U.)

Glad to hear you admit that. 😂

It doesent take an expert to see that they are banking on a lot of "diamonds in the rough". Sure you might get lucky with one but consistently going to the well eventually the bucket is gonna come up empty.

How the hell is it negative if it's the truth? Butch banked on legacies and came through but legacies don't come through every year. Tennessee is suffering at positions of need and all the proof is in the tape this season. Butch was handed the east two years in a row and pissed the bed by either close games or losing to lesser teams when he had the better team. That's on him he can't continue to say the team needs to own it. Good coaches own their mistakes and make nessasary coaching changes Butch refuses to.

When you refuse to change you get fired just ask Miles.

The Gaddy bros, Bennett and Crosby are not diamonds in the rough. All are good DTs. Not too often you can get 4 solid DTs in a single class.

You're so FOS it's not even funny.

It is a really good DT class. We have some really talented players there. We have one of the best running backs in the country. Should be top 3 imo. Ingot is also a good player. I think we have some underrated guys in this class such as Labruzza, Murphy, Bembry and some others. But I am concerned with the class, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. If we compare our class to the top classes like GA and others, we aren't even close. So while there are some great pieces, It's not where we need to be if we want to compete at a high level. I do believe that we will sign Trey Smith. I have no idea about anyone else. Hopefully we get Wade because we need an elite lockdown corner. One of our biggest needs however, is a big time defensive end. We do not have an elite DE in this class and we need one bad! We've seen the kind of impact Barnett has had. We need a guy who can fill that role, even if they are not as good as Barnett is.

Good post.

I think we've done a really good job at DT (assuming we hold on to all 4 current commits). If we finish with Moore and Smith on the O-line we will have a very solid group there as well. I think we're still a solid safety and DE short of a really good class though.

We also need an upgrade at QB, and we've taken a LB or two that make me scratch my head. I expect the staff to part ways with a couple of current commits at those positions as soon as the opportunity to upgrade presents itself.

I like the CBs we have committed, but I agree that we are missing an elite player at that position.

This reminds me of a Spurrier SC class. Low on recognized elite talent, but solid with some high ceiling developmental prospects. One class like this is fine, but CBJ can't consistently win with these types of classes. Even Spurrier couldn't and CBJ is no Spurrier.

Bottom line is Butch will sign 25+/- players and all of them will need coaching up. Some more so than others. Therein lies the problem with me. Can this coaching staff develop them? Several players haven't came along like expected. Is that on the player or the coaching? Still can't say Butch is a guy that gets more out of his players than most coaches.

Nope. Just undefeated vs Spurrier.

I am by far not a recruiting expert but my fear has less to do with stars and more to do with coaching them up.

I just don't see improvement and player development. That is what scared me.

If you are good at player development and scheming then I truly think you can take high level three stars and turn them into a winning team. My issue is we don't seem to do this.

Corners never ever look back at the ball and it seems we keep making the same mental errors over and over again.

Our O line should be much improved by now too and they just seem like they are no different than last year.

Can't argue with you on the DB's but have to differ with you on OL. We have played with 7 or 8 different combos this year and most of the time we have had good running production. Didn't agree with having Thomas at center when he was dealing with the ankle but overall the OL has played well, in my opinion.

I think it's a decent, but not great class. Adding Smith and Moore will help. But without any other highly rated players, I think this class will end up around 14th nationally and 6th in the SEC.

It is probably Butch's weakest class since his first one. Epic finish would look something like this for me:

Trey Smith
Cam Akers
Lamont Wade
DeAngelo Gibbs
DJ Mathews
TJ Moore
A QB

I think that is actually possible. OL targets see the need. Mathews saw what the offense is capable of with the long ball. Akers has seen roughly 4 different RBs thrive in the offense this year, he knows he can come in play immediately and make plays. DB targets know our backfield is bad going into next year, plus Shoop. And we just need a QB every class. First man onboard there is fine for me.

I know that a lot of you guys follow recruiting a lot closer than I do. So because of that I'm asking 2 questions to get your opinions on this class?

Are you concerned that this class is going to be a let down to continue to progress and what concerns you about it besides ranking alone?

Also, if their are a few recruits out their that we still have a chance with that could improve this class who are they and what do you think our chances are?

Regarding your 2nd question.

Trey Smith-85% chance for TN
Cam Akers-50% chance for TN
T.J. Moore-60% chance for TN
Yusuf Corker-75% chance for TN

I would be thrilled with 3 of the above 4 and surprised if we got all 4. We've seen what Butch can do in recruiting, especially at closing so I would not underestimate him.

Prediction: We get 3 of the 4 and lose 2 or 3 current commits

Note: There are other very good recruits in play but since most of them are not above a 3* on at least one site I did not mention them due to the star gazers. Bubba Thompson is one of them, exceptional athlete. Currently a HS QB committed to Auburn to play baseball.

There are a couple other QBs but I don't think we have a good shot at them. Just my opinion.

You just can't be competitive in the SEC with a class that's 75% 3 stars and that's what this class is.

Disagree. You can be competitive anywhere with 3 and 4 star players. It's whether or not the player has the measurables to match up or create mismatches and fits the system. And perhaps most importantly has the mindset to succeed. It's all in the evaluation.

PS- We aren't 75% 3 star are we? Who is your source on that?
