Officials making mistakes is not the entire problem. Many times their "mistakes" are egregious and they use "human error" and "judgement calls" as an excuse for the horrible officiating. They change the rules on the fly (blowing plays dead several seconds after the snap), they lack any level of consistency, and they have zero accountability for their poor performance. The problem is that no serious measures are being taken to correct those mistakes. This was pointed out on The Bennington Show a few weeks ago.
Players and coaches, playcallers, assistants waving sign boards, get-back coaches, all make dozens of mistakes a game.
Understood by everyone watching sports.
Refs make mistakes and people are suddenly aghast.
Makes sense.
The quality of their officiating points to a problem with the entire process of an official being certified as capable of accurately and evenly enforcing the game rules.
Officials should all be trained to make the proper calls. They should all have the same training and they should have continued education as well. Mainly, they need to be full-time employees and required to maintain a license for officiating.
People are going to makemitsakes, that's what we do. . . but there is no excuse for allowing it to continually happen year after year without instituting measures to help insure that the mistakes are kept to a minimum. If the current process isn't working, it needs to be adjusted.
I don't think there is a sports fan on the planet who would want any game manipulated by an official. I would certainly rather the game be decided by the players and coaches.
