Recruiting Football Talk VII

Ryan Callahan was just on Basilio. To summarize this topic he said that Tennessee was in it until the end on some big names, and we sometimes offered significantly more money, but the recruit still chose another school at the altar. Reason being that we essentially don’t have an ace closer. We need someone to help get us across that finish line more often with the biggest fish.

Again this doesn’t mean we aren’t doing well but it means we could be doing better with some changes.
Isn’t that Willie Martinez’s main job is to be an aggressive recruiter and “close” recruitments? If not, what value does he bring to the table?

Do you think this is what people are discussing? It seems like some people are just in a lot of despair, claiming our recruiting is not good. I haven't noticed many saying, "We're doing better than we have in 2 decades, but we still need to do better."

It's mostly, "Holy Sh*+, we are behind UGA & Alabama, OSU, etc, we are never gonna win anything. . . I'm not saying fahr Heupel, but maybe fahr the staff and fahr Heupel next year.". . all while completely disregarding the recent NCAA issues and scholarship reductions and ignoring the absolutely incredible job of securing the return of our most important players.
Generally best to ignore 'those people'. They will never be satisfied. Tennessee will never be good enough to stop their moaning. But on this, I'm with Weezer. It's ok to be critical in spots. Just not 'the sky is falling' critical. Now let's go get a big time DL.

Your closer can't be afraid to get some fleas. Heup is the cool family that hosts the family Christmas party every year, but your closer has to be the drunk uncle that's not afraid to do what he's gotta do to get what he wants.
Buying the prospects beer or liquor when the family isn't looking is what is missing.

Two things can be true at the same time. A fan may see one as being more important than the other and that will color their opinion on the matter and likely make them stress that side more than the other.

1) We’re recruiting better than we have in a long time. True.

2) We’re not recruiting better than the elite programs we face each year. True.

So both can be true at the same time and discussing both is valid.
Good analogy.
Like…hey I got a date to the prom with a girl from the band….
Oh yeah, man, is she a hot a majorette?
No, a flag girl.
Oh, that’s cool too…I guess.?

As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired.

I think most fall on a spectrum between the two. We all want to see the program succeed but have different opinions on what view is more important. I don’t think many are saying to fire Heupel though.

Too often the points of view here get distilled into all or nothing views but most are more nuanced.

I would like to know what is missing and what needs to be fixed. The second and more important part is whom is available for LB coach, TE Coach or QB coach/OC; that we would sign an instantly become stone cold killers. Not saying that they are not doing a great job but we aren't moving off KP,GE,RG,WM, TB and of course CJH.

Too often in so many conversations (especially politics) views are distilled into false dichotomies. It's simpleton thinking.

The only person I've actually wanted gone is CWM. I've joked about Banks, because of @InVOLuntary , but I don't feel CWM has taught basic fundamentals, JMO.

The returning players are great for next year. Especially the linemen. And we have our future OL on the roster, for the most part, they just need to be developed. But we'll lose a lot of DL after next season, and we haven't signed any big-time DL. (DL is different from the Edge guys). Someone like Heard may work out, but we need more. I honestly think offensive recruiting has been good, but I think we need to do better recruiting defense. Maybe that's on the offensive system we play. Maybe it's on Banks and the defensive staff. I don't know. But Heupel needs to figure it out.

Honestly, the one truly lacking position in this class being CRG's position group has me baffled. I don't understand it.

We don't get Jermod McCoy without Martinez. He's closed on guys like Jordan Matthews and some others. He's a good recruiter but Garner is by and large our best recruiter. I'd say Ekeler may be the 2nd best recruiter after Garner.
