Start out by keeping your head above water making (free style) strokes through the water if an instructor told you to go under then they definitely weren’t helping the cause..involving any extra stuff like going under, dont attempt anything remotely close to that until you get confidence in your swimming ability…another thing that will help you mentally is practicing in water you know you can stand in most cases 4ft.removes the fear of drowning
