Actually, Louisville Slugger is being pressed by Marucci when it comes to wood bats. SAM Bats is a distant third as they only produce maple bats and not ash bats.To answer the question of why teams use metal bats it is cost and sponsorship. Metal bats can go a long time and there are many manufacturers. Wood bats there is really only one manufacturer and they don't last as long.
True as to wood bats not lasting as long. On average, a MLB player orders 120 bats per year.
Metal bats will lose their pop over time with usage. Since MLB does not use metal bats, no comps exist for the number of bats a MLB player would need/order.
