Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Two browns tight ends had super easy drops. Neither one were wearing gloves. In 30 degree snowy weather. I've hardly ever seen NFL receivers without gloves let alone in this kind of weather.
Real men where short sleeves and no gloves in cold weather football games. These whiny girls these days would've never lasted years ago..

N.C.State showed what they've been all season a mediocre .500 team. Individuals should've been able to see that when State struggled against a FCS team in their 1st game of the year.

Lost their QB some will say but they weren't very good with him either...

Got a bad feeling Kiffy is going to dog walk Gata this weekend. FL D played a lot of snaps last week. They are bad on early downs, Miss is among the best. Lagway is probably still limited in run game. Swamp at noon isn't the same as 7pm Swamp. Hate it.

UT - 17
Kentucky - 13

Big plays helped the Vols to a 17-0 lead over UK in Lexington. A long pass to Larry Seivers set up a Mike Gayles TD and Stanley Morgan scored on an 80 yrd run. Morgan had 138 yrds on 17 carries. UT had a hard time in the second half, but the defense held strong on 4th down with 3 minuets left, and secured the 17-13 victory. With the win, Tennessee became the eleventh team to win 500 career games.

The fact that SOS varies widely among publications tells you it isn't a set calculation. Let's just use common sense there.

Just as 1 example picked at random, Miami's opps are 2% higher than us, yet they're 37 spots below us.

It was posted earlier our opponents' W-L cumulative record is sub-100 nationally...and yet we have the #17 SOS according to the post you replied to...

By definition a statistic is a set calculation. Fact is SOS is a very simplistic stat that takes into account very few (one) variables and is not as nearly meaningful as so many give it credence. And they don't ever show the actual numbers just an ordinal ranking, I am sure everyone of these rankings puts their own spin on it.
Just like polls most people don't understand statistics and just look at the numbers and blindly accept them. Just like most people don't really understand football they just watch the ball and see the score.
Besides that stupid committee doesn't give a rip about any of it.

From people who get SOS and how it is used:

"The college football playoffs are even worse. The committee is meant to take into account the strength of schedule of the candidate teams. However, no methodology is specified. This leaves room for bad methodology. This is especially true when you consider the following quote directly from the CFP website: “Nuanced mathematical formulas ignore some teams that ‘deserve’ [emphasis theirs] to be selected”.

Translating for everyone out there, “we would rather pick our favorite and most profitable teams to make the playoffs than teams that are actually better”. Math is not to be trusted, of course, because everyone knows that statistics lie!

I’ve been disappointed in Mashack (not actually) just because he ain’t averaging 12/5/5 like I thought he would.
One guy I would almost pay just to watch him play defense. He is like a ticked off yellow jacket…..eventually he is going to get you, maybe several times.
