Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Out and about earlier, Kevin Simon filling in for Swain on the radio today. They need to give that man his own radio show. Put him on in place of Tyler and Will. Even when he criticizes the program, you can tell just how much Kevin loves the Vols. And he had a lot to say on how we need to improve. And I agreed with just about all of it.
people listen when he speaks. brand recognition.

@LWSVOL You still talk to @therealviper?

I’m not underselling Lewis, I was encouraged by what I saw the other night, he just isn’t Sampson.

Lewis is fine as a #2 guy, we need to be patient and wait for an elite RB portal guy, if one enters that’s good enough. I’m fine with who we have if no one enters.

Take away Sampson and our record is around 7-5 or 8-4.

- Take away Sampson’s 2 TDs against UK and the score is 14-18, UK

- Take away Sampson’s 2 TDs against Bama and the score is 13-17, Bama

- Take away Sampson’s 3 TDs against Florida and the score is 2-17

I don’t think Lewis can provide us with those stats next year, and that’s not a knock on him.

He doesn't need to be Sampson though, and damn Sampson was in year 3. My only complaint is we didn't let Peyton be RB2 from the start. Bishop is good and a hard worker, but he isn't as explosive, isn't as fast, and isn't as big. Should have taken whatever mistakes Peyton may make early in the year and had a true 1-2 punch with him and Dylan since they're running styles and size were different from one another.

I'm not playing the "take away" BS either. Heupel & staff recruited and developed Sampson for 3 damn years they are as responsible for his amazing year as he is. Just like they helped Wright become a NFL back too.

Here's what's proven we've had 0 luck with portal RBs, every single RB under Heupel has been a HS kid that got developed in this system for 2-3 years. Peyton Lewis is next man up and will be a beast.

You got the cliff notes? Kevin Simon was a hoss when healthy. Would love to hear what he had to say.
He was talking about how we don't currently have elite WRs for one thing. We don't have the kind of WRs that can catch the ball and make things happen. Thornton was arguably our best WR this year and he had most of his yards by getting behind the safeties. We didn't have WRs with lots of yards after contact.

He talked about a lot of aspects of the team, team mentality, and coaching. You could probably go to the WNML web page and at least find clips, if not the whole show. It would be today's Josh & Swain Show as he was filling in for Swain.

I look at Lewis like I look at our team. He’s good, but not elite…yet.
Take away all our wins and we're 0-13. There, I fixed it for you!

Appreciate it mane. I’ll try to find the rest of it on the WMNL page.

I think you're underselling Peyton Lewis BIG TIME and I think we'll be less dependent on elite RB play anyway with Nico in year 2.

Plus for whatever reason we don't seem to **** the bed at Bama like we do at the Swamp or at Georgia.

Last year a Joe Milton lead attack with a far inferior defense to this year was up 20-7 at the half.

Agree on Lewis. Think he’s going to be an exceptional RB1 when Sampson leaves.

I think a "make **** happen" WR is big time needed.

First one we had was Velus Jones Jr. and then Hyatt became that guy...I think they thought Squirrel could become one, but he just hasn't. Too small and also his weird issues with inconsistency when catching the ball.

We had 3 WRs that were all the same big slow off the start types...what we really needed was to leave Seldon at WR and develop him into that sort of WR. 6'2" 220lbs = AJ Brown/Deebo Samuel etc.

Going to be pretty bewildering to me if we don’t try to get a game changing receiver out of the portal (if one is still available). We desperately need one. I want to believe that’s what Mike Matthews will be that for us, but that’s banking on player development. Up to Heupel to determine if Kelsey Pope is the guy to do that or if change is needed.

And last year Sampson wasn’t Jalen Wright. Hopefully WR’s are better and we don’t have to ride one running back quite as much. Running back would be way down the list of worries for me. We badly need one or two wide receivers that can separate, catch and get some yac. That would open up everything else. We witnessed it in 2022 with our team and Saturday night with OSU. I see some pretty capable guys in the backfield. Time will tell.

Was freshman Dylan Sampson the same player as junior SEC POY Dylan Sampson? Of course not. Junior Peyton Lewis will be much better than he was this season as a freshman. The point I think you’re trying to make specifically about Lewis is based on the assumption that Lewis never gets any better. Sampson certainly did and he flat out carried us to a few wins. Lewis will be a comparable player after a little more seasoning and development.

Come on, man. We saw glimpses of what Wright and Sampson could be during their sophomore seasons but they didn't actually "break out" until the first year they started. Saying Lewis is just going to be a #2 guy after what he did this season is selling him short. Lewis is bigger and faster than both of those guys and poised to be the next great back after Sampson. The coaches think Lewis is going to be elite next season.
