He died because of the open face helmet, I thought. Hit his head, cracked his skull.

The story was he loosen his seat belts during a late red flag and didn't tighten them back up when they went back to racing. Of course if he was wearing the hans device he would probably been fine, but he didn't like the fact he couldn't move his head around to see as well.
