Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Ok I have a serious question for you guys.

Are we setting ourselves up for heartache this season? No one and I mean no one on the national level expects us to be very good this year! Before you jump all over me I know they are wrong often, such as Fl St being ranked 10 and losing to Ga Tech.

Is it because Nico only has one game under his belt? Are we just seeing everything through orange shaded glasses?

What are all of us seeing that they aren’t?

I'm sure one or more of them will try and sell their pair soon

For me, next year is our first year to contend for titles. It will be totally CH’s team and this year will be an indicator of things to come. I think Nico fits Heupel‘s system and we will see the entire playbook running at warp speed.

Defensively, we are catching up with hopes that we are there. I am not worried about the front 7….it’s the DB’s I’ll be watching in hopes of significant improvement.

That being said, the schedule lines up really well for us. 9-3 is there with an outside shot at 10-2.

I think the media is living of our last 10-15 years and wants to see us prove it before they jump aboard.

Just my thoughts….

What excites me…… the talent and experience on both lines. Pearce, Herring and Ross might be our best collection of rush ends we have had as a group imo. There’s a reason they didn’t fight to keep Baron around. The SEC is a line of scrimmage league and I think we are really good on both lines

The quick response? Why should this August be any different from every other August in VolNation?

Glad to see a poster thinking soberly this week.

Trying to be objective: Next year we'll have more experience in some skill areas. But this season I think will be our best offensive line as a unit for the next 2-3 years, mostly because we have such an intelligent, experienced, and exhaustively prepared center to call that aspect of the offense.

So if we gel quickly at QB and the secondary...
get some keen production early from our #2 and #3 running backs...
catch some breaks in big games...
benefit from some bad luck hitting some top-10 teams...
and avoid injuries to our thinnest position rooms...
yeah--we could make the playoffs this season.

But if we don't exceed the reasonable expectations repeated by the media, we'll need a bowl victory to get to 10 wins. Nico is special--but he's a special, redshirt freshman QB.
