Recruiting Football Talk VIII

He said this after our first game at home. There was a little different approach by both teams last night. He didn't want Chaz Lanier shooting, but Chaz went 0-7.

Yeah and honestly Chaz just chucked up 4 or 5 at the end without really getting a clean look.

The first game we took 'em and took good looks. For whatever reason they didn't fall and we lost. Second game we almost over corrected, guys would pass up good looks from deep and drive or pass into a more difficult shot.

I understand, but at some point, you have to simplify it to attempt to provide comparisons. But the bottom line is that UT fans are not paying the highest ticket prices. There are quite a few other programs that charge just as much or more for their fans to attend games. People will say anything when they are emotionally upset at a loss.
I agree that it's unlikely that we pay the highest. It is also unlikely that it's outside the top 10 and certainly won't stay there with sustained success.

People do tend to come unglued when their idols fail them. A constant reminder to myself to reevaluate my priorities. Sports is entertainment. Best not make it a god.

Thats pretty much what the tweet is saying. People complain that we are “too spoiled” when we complain about a loss, but we pay top dollar in season tickets, donations, 10% talent fee, we dont like seeing our teams 💩 the bed like they did last night or against uf, and the criticism against the teams is often valid
Newsflash: Our sports teams will continue to lose games. If you can't see the big picture, then go find another form of entertainment. But we aren't going undefeated in many sports in this conference.

Looks for UT on this list...and keeps scrolling...and scrolling. I was trying to find where we rank in wins across all sports.

Until recently the only thing we were good at was football and women’s basketball (and its success was due to Summitt and a separate AD). We had occasional periods where other sports would do well but a lot of that was despite the AD. No one would even bother looking for us on AD/Governor’s Cup type lists because we weren’t going to be on them.

That is finally changing as we have gotten our ish together but some of these lists are dominated by schools who earn points from sports we don’t field and we will never reach the top of them because of that. Others measure different things or compensate for schools fielding different teams.

The guy is just an a-hole bishing. He would be bishing and ranting no matter the ticket price. The notion that whiners are going to start bishing and fahring now because of NIL or whatever other excuse is just stupid. The same people are going to go ballistic who have always gone ballistic. It has nothing to with tickets or NIL or the orbit of Saturn. We lost a basketball game.

Is it ok that I'm not in love with pure capitalism? Yes, some of that distaste comes from 'crony capitalism'. Now, give me Capitalism where all boats rise (well, almost all) and sign me up.
100. I don't like a ton of aspects. But the illusion that TN is not keeping up, is spending more than others, stealing money, hurting fans, etc is wild. We did not invent the situation we are just working to stay current.

I have been critical of Barnes in the past, but the product he is producing is not mediocre. Most teams don't waltz into Rupp arena and come away with a win. This basketball team will likely receive a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament unless things really fall off the rails. How is that mediocre?

We can talk about the performance in the NCAA tournament. It is not good. However, there is no guarantee that any coach we hire will automatically be better than Rick has.
Not only is it not mediocre on an absolute basis, it sure is hell not mediocre relative to the historical performance of Tennessee's basketball program. That ultimately is the benchmark he should be judged against.

We do not have an especially storied basketball history. We haven't been bad at basketball, but it is nowhere near as historically successful as football. We've never won a national title, never made a FF, and only been to the EE twice. We have won the SECT just twice in the last 45 years.

Exactly.

We're top 5 in men's basketball, there are 364 teams. How TF is top 1% mediocre?
Lady Vols are 15th, there are 362 teams. How TF is top 5% mediocre?
Football we finished 9th, there are 134 teams. How TF is top 8% mediocre?

Baseball is coming off winning the Natty and Softball just reached the Super Regional.

I get the fans don't want to pay for a mediocre product...but damn, when things are good we seem to be delusional. There's a ton of great teams that aren't winning championships we have them in 3 different sports right now, this is the best era of UT sports EVER.
Very well said. And eloquent.
