If NCSU doesn't make some huge improvements in the trenches, I don't see how they can do much on either side of the ball.
They made their rushing $$$ on the edges because their interior OL was porous against WCU's interior DL. Their OL was able to clear the edge for their rushes, but UT probably has the best DL in the country. Our defensive interior should feast, and that's not even mentioning yet that our outside DL is a stronger point than our interior!
I just don't see how they can get a run game started, and if they are one dimensional, it's over with our edge rushers.
Their DL... I'm seeing NO push from their DL against either rushing or passing. If they can't bully WCU, what will they do against UT's OL? You complicate that with our wide splits, which should force their LBs to declare whether they are playing run or pass...? Their corners and LBs actually looked a bit undersized against WCU. I'm not sure what they can do against our size and speed. To further complicate things, they looked really susceptible to that WCU QB runs. He's no Nico.
QB... McCall seems to have made his name in a lower conf, with a weak(ish) arm, a little bit of scrambling wiggles, and a LOT of accuracy? I don't know if it was first game jitters, not knowing the scheme, if he was right and the receivers were wrong...? But he only looked accurate when WCU gave a lot of cushion and the receivers were wide open sitting down in zones. I'm not sure that'll be enough for them in the passing game against us, especially if we shut down the running game and passing is all they have.
Receivers... Er, Receiver. They seem to have one guy.
My prediction is that we have a lot of success early with run plays and short, quick throws. As soon as the Safeties start inching up to play that, we rip the ceiling off and go over their heads. On defense, I think we shut down their run early by setting the edge and forcing everything inside. I don't think their inside OL can open the holes. We get out to an early lead, they become one dimensional on offense due to lack of running game and the need to catch up. Our DL feasts and shuts them down. We win by at least two scores and it never really feels like we're in danger. It may not be a blowout, but I predict a comfortable win that looks good on the national stage and continues the hype.
I suspect NCSU faithful know this. I've watched a couple of NCSU content creators and the pattern here seems to be 'Wizard of Oz' logic. "Pay no attention to those first three quarters. They never happened. The last-quarter NCSU will be the one that shows up against UT. The first 3 Qs were just our great team working the cobwebs off, and that happened."
(I don't think that's what happened. I think NCSU and WCU are pretty equal in starter talent. I think NCSU has a bit better depth than WCU, and we eventually saw a bad ACC team against a very tired low-tier team.)
