Complicated. AT&T split UVerse, AT&T TV, and DirecTV into a separate company. AT&T owns 70% of that company and sold 30% to TPG (Texas Pacific Group). So they are separate but AT&T still has a controlling stake in DTV.

Edit: Look at TPG's wikipedia page. They've been accumulating ownerships of major companies across multiple sectors for decades. Everything from AT&T, Petco, major banks, manufacturers/inventors of smartcard tech, research companies, tech companies, agricultural product companies like Del Monte, etc.
