I was looking at our expected roster for this year and we may be at or above 40 blue chippers this year. Sometimes we have players transfer or leave the team during fall camp so we won’t really know until we kick off against Charlotte. Our numbers have been climbing since Pruitt got here. Obviously, we’ve had holes in our depth chart in recent years and will still have a lot of youth in spots this season. but we’re within striking distance of what LSU won everything with last year. Clemson has won a couple times with not much more than we have but with their schedule they don’t need the depth required to survive the brutality of the SEC regular season grind. If we can get to around 50 blue chips on our roster I’m figuring we could be in the hunt.
The class we’re working on now will replace the 2017 class so not only should our numbers rise this year but the rise should continue with the 2021 class. Post season last year we lost I think 8 blue chippers, Ryan Johnson, Jennings, Callaway, Byrd, Bituli, D. Taylor, Warrior, and Wood-Anderson. So far we’ve replace those guys with 14 blue chippers in the 2020 class, including Cade, so unless we lose some we have, that’s a plus 6 minimum and if Zach Evans or JT Daniels comes on board, then that’s one more. After this year it looks like we lose 8 again, Guarantano, Chandler, Trey Smith, Fils-Aime, Gooden, Aubrey Solomon, Savion Williams, and Brandon Kennedy. Coming into the day we were half-way to breakeven replacing those blue chip numbers and by the end of the day expect to be 75% of the way there with more waiting in the wings. While the competition for these guys is obviously fierce I’d say the rebuilding job is moving along nicely. This year's expected move up and the anticipated move up for next year should go a long way to leveling the playing field between us and the very top teams in college football, blue chip wise. jmo.
