Been thinking about a interview I heard on a Knoxville radio station a couple weeks ago and wondering what the opinions of this theory would be on here. Before I go on please understand I didn't grow up a Vol fan. So while I continue to learn the history of the program realize I don't have the same perspective as some as I didn't move to TN until 2006. Started rooting for the Vols in 2010ish and a season ticket holder in 2015. So I missed the glory years and would really like to get back to that so I can experience it first hand.

I won't say the station or the person making these comments at first because I already know most would tune it out just based on that haha. But the interviewee brought up an explanation of our current status in the CFB landscape. On the surface it makes sense. But didn't know if he was just hating on UT. He said one big reason we are struggling is because of how CFB has exploded over the last 20 years and tv deals probably hurt teams like us and Nebraska the most. Mainly because almost every game is on TV or a streaming service and everyone has weekly access to almost every team now. Where as in the 80s and 90s we were regularly featured on a national broadcast and kids from all over the south followed us. Many of them came to UT so they could play on a big stage in front of a national audience on TV. Which is why CPF could go into South Carolina (and other surrounding states) and recruit big name players to come to UT. He continued by saying our expectations as fans haven't caught up with the effect TV has had on our program. Also mentioned its hard on us because Tennessee isn't really a power state in terms of high school talent on a national scale.

On the surface it makes sense. I just wondered what the opinion was on this from some of you seasoned UT vets. For the record I don't like this guy as he is a big UT hater. Just found this outlook interesting.
While plausible, here we are still reeling in top 5-15 classes the past decade WHILE stinking it up badly. We are nothing like Nebraska out in the middle of nowhere. We are just as close to prime talent as Clemson or Alabama or many others.

Our problem hasn't been shite recruiting, it has been everything else. Development, scheme is why we can't get over any of the dang humps and inflection points needed to grab more elite classes and get the snowball rolling. If we could win a couple huge games or get to Atlanta, we could reel in top 5 level classes...but we just drop the ball every time or make an absolute garbage hire (Dooley).

saw that coming a mile away - it will always be a measuring stick.

But to be honest, it's too early, but the media will jump on anything they can.

They have an upset and we have been upset. So...
They can keep him . Pruitt may be struggling right now but I would rather have him than any coach that had any part in that Sandusky/PSU crap.

not 100% sold that we walked away from Martinez as much as it may have been a mutual thing. he liked NE and Frost, and when they got together, it made that situation way more attractive. Helton and Pruitt did travel and visit him in home....so there had to be some ineterest in pursuing him. i'd imagine that it just wound up being a mutual deal....

as to the rest, pretty much agree. Shrout was a project, and we knew it. Maurer was less so, but there was some ?'s on the level of competition he had in that FL division, andthere was the well documented elite 11 camp, which he did well and worked his way up that ladder....

point being, neither one was brought here to be "the guy"....competition and depth. it's also why christ and the MD kid were brought in and why we were going after JT Daniels. we knew, and have known, that the QB position was in flux, and they've tried to increase the talent level and overall competition level, but none of it has panned out.

we can blame the coaches for that, ultimately, it is their responsibilty...but i don't think it's for lack of effort, or recognition, that the positon wasn't "set".....we missed on the recruiting trail, up until HB, and none of the GT's we've brougth in or tried for have worked out....and it appears even if we had gotten JT Daniels, that'd of been another bust as he's not doing a thing in Athens except rehab.

timing of all of it sucked....but....looking ahead, HB and Salter really give that room a big boost, and if we're still able to get simpson, i think you can say the QB position would be addressed....

we're just still stuck in this funk right now.....and it's gotten old.
I hate to say it...but with HB Salter Simspon on the horizon...

Necks year it is!

I definitely think that this Arkansas game is much more important than any of us could have foreseen before the season started.
They go from winless in the SEC to having a semblace of offense, but more so an actual legit defense. Of course they would.

And Odom is probably doing the same crap as last year at Mizzou and mugging every receiver until they call it. Had like 4 or 5 obvious PIs last year vs us but Chaney and JG ripped him up. Hopefully can do that again but not sure we have the same toughness at wr either to deal with that. Hyatt should be on verts all day.

Franks has been decent so far. Can our pass D stop a slant all game? Remains to be seen and every offense knows it.

I agree. To speak more about Hyatt, I think he is the type of receiver that will make other receivers around him better. He has to be accounted for any time he’s on the field. That game he had against Bama was a legitimate coming out party. (And one of the only bright spots in the game.)

Agreed

I don’t think Kennedy is good at all
He's not...but he's heady apparently.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't remember a staff so focused on guys that know the offense, the calls, getting us lined up correctly as this one. Maybe it ends up being a good thing, but it seems like most other teams can just do it. We apparently need brain surgeons just to line our guys up and play correctly.

Is our offense that complex or is it because of coaching that apparently only 1 QB and 1 Center on our roster knows what to do?

If it is that complex...maybe it shouldn't be. College isn't the nfl...we don't have the practice time and 10 year contracts...we have all new guys every 3-5 years and very limited time in pads, all of which lends itself to simplicity. The Briles/Leach way for instance. Plug and play styles. They seem to work just fine and make continuity easy.

Colton Jumper says hi.

Is Chip Long viewed as someone who develops QBs? I know he was a pretty decent OC at ND. I just didn’t know what position group he is known for usually coaching. Would be an easy fix to can Weinke and plug Long into the position if so.

And if anyone thinks you need a complex offense to score against great teams...see Ole Miss putting up about 700 yards and 48 points on Bama. I've also read Clemson's offense is terribly simple as well - though not to the point of Briles and not even having a playbook.

Appears TE is his mainstay position. Don't see QB anywhere on his bio.

Hey why is it just about every week our O line jumps offside when the opposing D line shifts? This was the third game in a row it happened and we know it happened multiple times during the GA game... I thought our O line was supposed to be packed with 5* vets?
