While plausible, here we are still reeling in top 5-15 classes the past decade WHILE stinking it up badly. We are nothing like Nebraska out in the middle of nowhere. We are just as close to prime talent as Clemson or Alabama or many others.Been thinking about a interview I heard on a Knoxville radio station a couple weeks ago and wondering what the opinions of this theory would be on here. Before I go on please understand I didn't grow up a Vol fan. So while I continue to learn the history of the program realize I don't have the same perspective as some as I didn't move to TN until 2006. Started rooting for the Vols in 2010ish and a season ticket holder in 2015. So I missed the glory years and would really like to get back to that so I can experience it first hand.
I won't say the station or the person making these comments at first because I already know most would tune it out just based on that haha. But the interviewee brought up an explanation of our current status in the CFB landscape. On the surface it makes sense. But didn't know if he was just hating on UT. He said one big reason we are struggling is because of how CFB has exploded over the last 20 years and tv deals probably hurt teams like us and Nebraska the most. Mainly because almost every game is on TV or a streaming service and everyone has weekly access to almost every team now. Where as in the 80s and 90s we were regularly featured on a national broadcast and kids from all over the south followed us. Many of them came to UT so they could play on a big stage in front of a national audience on TV. Which is why CPF could go into South Carolina (and other surrounding states) and recruit big name players to come to UT. He continued by saying our expectations as fans haven't caught up with the effect TV has had on our program. Also mentioned its hard on us because Tennessee isn't really a power state in terms of high school talent on a national scale.
On the surface it makes sense. I just wondered what the opinion was on this from some of you seasoned UT vets. For the record I don't like this guy as he is a big UT hater. Just found this outlook interesting.
Our problem hasn't been shite recruiting, it has been everything else. Development, scheme is why we can't get over any of the dang humps and inflection points needed to grab more elite classes and get the snowball rolling. If we could win a couple huge games or get to Atlanta, we could reel in top 5 level classes...but we just drop the ball every time or make an absolute garbage hire (Dooley).
