Umm...Fulmer didn’t hire Cutcliffe...he was already on the staff when Phil became head coach.

He rehired him in 2006. And Phil held this entire program together for nearly two decades. I undoubtedly trust him over any other AD. What’s the point of this? Fire Phil and bring in another Bahama John?

He was also not OC when Phil took over. Phil promoted him to that position. Pretty smart move, IYAM.

David Cutcliffe, John Chavis immediately spring to mind

You can thank Johnny Majors for both of them.

Chavis returned to Tennessee in 1989 as defensive line and linebackers coach under his former college coach, Johnny Majors. He was promoted to defensive coordinator under Majors' successor, Phillip Fulmer, in 1995. Under Chavis' watch, Tennessee gained a reputation for fielding some of the stingiest defenses in the nation.[4]

So for all the people on here who say “Fire Pruitt” or “Freeze” every other comment. Can you name one good hire other than Rodney Garner Fulmer has ever made? His entire history is one bad hire after another.

Yeah, he was so bad at hiring coaches that Tennessee only won 119 games from 1993-2004. One win short of averaging 10 wins a year.

Hiring him back in 2006 was a no brainer. Obviously Fulmer doesn’t have an eye for up and coming talent or diamonds in the rough. Also Cutcliffe was the brains of the operation. Look at Phils record with Cutcliffe and without. There is no doubt Phil loves this university but he makes one bad decision after another.

Just 3 years ago when he hired Pruitt he said he wanted a “defensive guy”...really?? When modern football is all about offense. History has shown us Fulmer will screw it up again. I don’t think you can let Pruitt go unless you basically have Matt Campbell/Hugh Freeze on the hook with a pending contract. Don’t do a coaching search like SC where coaches use you for raises at their prospective schools.

Okay, man.

As much as I like Phil, I think hiring him as AD is where the mistake was made. I know hindsight is always 20/20, but now I think the better bet would've been to have Phil interim coach for one year so Blackburn or whoever the new AD would've been could have time to find his guy. Yes, that might've hurt that recruiting class, but it we would now be in year 2 with a better candidate imo.

I say that to say this, I don't like Pruitt, I don't think he gets the job done, but if the next move is going to be another unproven guy we might as well just keep him and save the money.

That's completely opposite of Thanksgiving

Hiring Hamilton and then Dave and then Bahama John was so much better. I think he does a lot that we don't see. Pruitt was a mistake and you really should not make a mistake with football. But, after Bahama John, there were not a ton of options left.

I understand the Fulmer higher, and I think the reports about him fundraising well is true. Im sure he is good with some other things we are not aware of as well. But we have a HOF CFB coach who could've let us stabilize within, but instead he was put in a very high ranking position and made a rushed higher.

I’m just trying to understand the complete meltdown this season. Could Fulmer have possibly told Pruitt to play JG and let the young guys learn on the bench because of the whole Covid situation and it being a “throw away” season? I know, I’m grasping at this point.

I agree with this. I do think Fulmer has certain things he is really good at like fundraising, dealing with boosters, kissing babies, etc. At the time when they were looking at a new AD I was on team Blackburn. I am also biased though because I grew up in Chattanooga and I saw what he did for the Mocs.

It’s a sad state that we have one of the most passionate fan bases who drop tons of money into the program through merchandise, tickets, etc. and the presidents and leaders continue to sh## on us.
