That has nothing to do with anything.

He’s never had the experience of running a program as the head honcho. He is a part of the culture Dabo built, not one he built.

This job is too big for someone who doesn’t have experience. Hell, it’s too big for most that do have experience. Only way this cat gets hired is if we miss/have missed on others.
Was Ok St too big for Gundy?
Was Oregon too big for Kelly?
Was Clemson too big for Dabo?
Was MS St too big for Mullen?
Was Washington too big for Sark?
Thats a lazy argument either he has it or he doesn't. Getting a guy like Elliott is better than running out a failed re tread

Looks like the AD has had TE's name and resume in his back pocket as his ace for whenever the job at UCF came open. He has obviously vetted him for a long time, and had this guy ready to play for a while.

It's not a hire I was excited about, but if this really is it then I trust that this is the AD's best.
If it’s him you better keep that avi

From TB Basketball overtime tonight:

Roger is pissed about the Basket Ball team!

Tony gave an update as he knows it. 3 Haslams, AD and Cancellor spent significant time together at halftime. No info out there, people who say they know are lying. Don’t think Matt Campbell is happening, but feels like they are kicking tires on him. Throwing money at candidates. Be careful what you are reading. Moving quickly, but not recklessly. Encouraging listeners to let it go......this guy has money and leaving him alone to do his job. Won’t be surprised if they circle back to Elliott. Be careful what you believe until someone is walked across the stage. P J Fleck and Dykes (sounded like puking sounds in background) are just talks, Elliott talk is potentially real (in TB option).
Appreciate the info. Haven’t heard much on VR except for Russell stanning for Fleck.

Eh. "Great" is a stretch.
He was losing too many games to teams he substantially out talented. He could recruit well here and be 4th or 5th in the conference.
At Texas, he was at least even with OU and a lot more talented than everybody else.
He is a great recruiter and has a knack for winning big games so I think he could be good but he will brag about being in mensa then go lose to Maryland. I don't want him at Tennessee just saying from a national perception he'd be considered a great hire.

I'm appreciative that AV posts here, but y'all need to be reasonable and use some common sense.

He was talking about who our next coach would be before we even hired DW. There's no way anything was locked up before then. I'm sure he had a few names in mind and felt good about it. But you can't make someone say yes. It is what it is.

I actually like him better than some of the others being mentioned. We're all just terrified of another coordinator, and Donde said we were not getting one.
I get it its scary. Pruitt shouldn't be the rule though, there were red flags galore with Pruitt, so far Elliott doesn't have any of those.

Basilio also said Roger had 10 soft tacos with 4 nacho fries. Roger might be my favorite part of the show. The other day he said he at 60 mcnuggets.

Signs are pointing to Elliott. It’s time to face it guys. I’ll support the man. Wish we hadn’t gone the coordinator route again but he’s as good as it gets at that position. Hopefully it pans out. Beats the hell out Will Healy and whatever the dork from West Virginia’s name is. If it had been Sonny Dykes I say just shut the whole program down. Just wish they hadn’t sat up there and lied to us and said “this isn’t a place to learn on the job” we aren’t dumb Randy Boyd.

He had a pretty avg record for the talent advantage he had. He could recruit great here and that result in 7 or 8 wins.

If it ends up being Elliott.... I have no idea if he would win big here. But I think at the very least he would solve a ton of problems and stock the roster full of talent and repair the Tennessee brand nationally and set up the next coach.

We just don't know what we would be getting. But I think he has a safe floor with a potentially monster ceiling. Recruiting would be good. Offense would be good. Keep Steele, add Garner? Potentially bring in Venables? It could look really good when it all comes together.

I'm not doing back flips over a Tony Elliott hire but I really like the thought behind it. It could work if he's ready and many smart football people (in college and NFL) seem to believe he is. I would give him a fair chance and hope the rest of the fanbase does as well. He's earned an opportunity like this. And our AD has earned the benefit of the doubt on this hire.

Just my 2 cents.

None of those jobs were remotely close to this situation.

Riddle me this - Which one of those had just fired a coach and multiple staff for cause for recruiting violations in the midst of an NCAA investigation that coincides with the worst era in their football history?
